As most of you know, I have a 84 suburban with a 350 motor. I know the 700r4 transmission needs rebuilding. I do a lot of towing with this suburban and am deciding whether to rebuild the 700r4 trans, or put in a 350 trans with a 9 inch tailshaft.

I am letting the majority decide for me on which one to go with.

Why would you want to loose overdrive? I don't get it.....

Not wanting to loose the overdrive, just wanting to know which one would be better on the heavy towing it will be going thru. I am not too familiar with them, so I thought I would let the ppl here decide for me.

Looks like I will try to get the 700r4 rebuild. I know it is a 85. Is there other years I should look at that would be better?

I am not running any emissions and am not sure what all I would need to install it after rebuild.

If possible get a 1988-1992 year 700R4 from a K-truck (4wd) and have it rebuilt.

You can update your 85 transmission with later parts. But I would just add extra clutches in the 3rd-4th gear, add corvette servo, .500" boost valve, shift kit setup for towing, good transmission cooler and a lockup kit so you can lockup the torque converter in 3rd gear. You could also just get a later model valve body too I think, thats the only real difference bewteen the early and later model transmissions, I don't remember if the valve bodies interchange though. You could also upgrade to a heavier sprag but for our year 700r4 its kind of expensive because the whole thing needs to be replaced, also the sun gear shell can be replaced with a stronger unit.

How much weight are we talking about here?

Not sure on exact weight. I do know my wife has a 26ft trailer loaded with her flea mkt items. Just want to be prepared if she gets more in there.

Do get a newer style 700R4, don't bother updating yours. It should be cheaper to just buy a core newer model and rebuild it instead of updating the old one.

a 700R4 is suposedly a turbo350 with an overdrive, i would go 700R4 all the way, i've got one in my truck and i love it. just gotta build them right if you want them to last

I belive if i was wanting a heavier duty for towing id put in a th375 or th400

Rebuild any core from 85 and up. I have an 85 and beat it pretty good. No problems with a stout rebuild.
