Panel guys, I’d like to quiet down the back…

I have nothing except carpet on the floor in my 68 panel. I have a good bit of noise coming from the sides and roof going over bumps. What have you used to quiet it down? Dynamat ? something else ?

If I end up keeping my panel Ill be coating all of the insides minus the wood floor with Lizard Skin. Heat version and noise version. My panel is black and I think using anything stick on is asking for trouble down the road. Ive used the Lizard Skin products on three trucks and I love it. Ill be doing the same with my burb. Eventually it will probably have a white top so at least it will reflect vs absorb the heat.

A local 4x4 shop I am working with used the Lizard skin heat and sound product on a "gravedigger" panel. Impressed with the results. Going to use the same products on my 72 cab.

My panel had no insulation, but was quiet? Maybe because it's 2wd.
I assume you're going to make some kind of a side panel to hide the insulation/sound barrier. It's a big area to fill between upright structure and panel face, 3-4". Be sure you still have the pads between outer body panel and uprights (barely visible in my pic). You could get real crazy and use a 3" blue foam board.

I talked to a stereo install guy years ago and he clued me in on a cheap Dynamat substitute. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, Roofing supply and buy Ice and water dam. It is made to put on your roof BEFORE anything else, directly on the wood.It is "tar" on one side and rubber on the other. As far as heat effecting the adhesion the hotter it gets the more it will stick. Just make sure where you place it is clean before trying to get it to stick.Also it might be better to install it in a warm place and possibly use a heat gun some as it is winter here in Michigan but next summer and the sun hits it and the temps skyrocket you won't be able to get it off!
All you are trying to do is keep the body panels from resonating.
Styrofoam can squeak if it is put in tight, ask the guys from the 70s 80s in there vans and it can be a pain to keep on the walls unless you put some sort of wall up.

I used that stuff on an old Astro Van when I didnt want to spend the dough on the nicer stuff. I agree heat makes it stick better when its face down on the roof of a house or vehicle floor. But when you add heat plus gravity it can loosen up and possibly sag. There are a ton of threads on this over on the HAMB. People make their own Lizard Skin, bubble wrap, hard foam, and people use the roof stuff you are talking about. I still have a few rolls in my garage, its cheap and easy to use and heck it may work for him, his vehicle is white. They also say that the tar based stuff can stink pretty good for a long while after its installed. Oh, how did it work in my Astro you ask? My nephew crashed and totaled it in a ditch before I could give a good review haha.

I would caution the use of home tar based products. Was in construction for many years and have considered it. From what I have uncovered it is not a good idea. I will not use it on my truck. That foil bubble stuff will do nothing and is useless.

In my '71 Suburban, I used stuff similar to Dynomat that I found on Amazon and put that sh&t EVERYWHERE! Ceiling, floor, sides. Did NOT put it on my wood rear floor. I used that reflective bubble wrap stuff mentioned earlier under the factory rubber mat. I used spray foam insulation in several of the perimeter gaps to insulate and sound deaden. I used regular house insulation behind the cargo panels. I insulated between my headliner panels and the roof. Also, I made some panels to cover the barn doors our of cardboard and the headliner material held on bt velcro. I have 50-series Flowmasters and I didn't want resonance or drone. Worked pretty well.

Thanks Panelman, you were right, I was missing the pads. I made some out of old fire hose type material and its much quieter now !

I don't remember. I used the factory headliner panels I bought that were in pretty bad shape. I bought some headliner material from Amazon and covered them. Used the factory bows that hold them up, but I also had some stainless strips that are wider and drilled holes to hold everything up better.

I wouldn't use Ice & Water Shield either. Or any asphalt-based product. Think tar. Also not a good idea, but no different from brushing tar on. It is acidic and can also cause sweating. An old school standing seam roofer I used to work with refused to put his roof over tar paper due to the corrosive nature. We'd put down red rosin paper instead. Definitely choose something other than the Ice & Water Shield. Also, looking ahead it will be a muckin' fess to remove.

Lizardskin made my my 76Buick Regal LS swap actually a joy to drive. The floors would get so hot in the summer that I could only drive for a little while. I got fed up and bought the lizardskin sound and ceramic coatings. I followed the directions to the letter and was amazed! I spent the rest of the summer driving for hours at a time. The floors were much quieter too. To put that in perspective, there is nothing covering the floor but lizardskin sound and lizardskin ceramic(No Interior.)

My 72 Blazer is getting the full treatment in the spring. The only difference is that I am going to raptor line on top of the lizardskin.

Lizardskin......I put that $h!+ on everything!
