Anyone with rear exit exaust having fume problems? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have heard that SUV's have this problem of exhaust coming out the rear and back into the cab. Anyone getting this? I am getting fumes inside and my exhaust is turned down before the rear bumper. Wondering if that is the problem. I am positive there are no leaks.

oh yeah. I had my exhaust on my first blazer dump right after the rear end and oh boy did I get high on my way to work. Once I lengthened them to exit out the rear sides it was much better but I did lose the deep throaty sound but I was also just runnig CB's.

Ya. I just had mine routed out behind the wheels. it's 100 times better that way. I was getting that same high anytime I drove mine anywhere.

I forget who said it.. but with these trucks there is a low pressure area behind the tailgate due to the "squareness" of the truck. Causing fumes to come back in. Kinda interesting to me comfing from an ME background

My sub dumps behinfd the rearend and I get fumes inthe truck a little. I need to go ahead and have them run out the back now that I have all the suspension work is done.

when I got my exhaust done on my truck, I tried to get them to route it out the back, but they woudn't because of the "low-pressure area" they said they would only do it out the sides and behind the rear wheel

I was thinking about running mine straight out the back but I am going rethink that. There is a low pressure area created right behind the Blazer and I think this will probably suck the exhaust back into the cab.

When I had mine out the back I installed all the original gaskets in an effort stop the fumes, it helped quite allot but didn't cure it.
Now the exhaust exits out the sides behind the tires at an angle.
I like the look personally.

My set-up is similar to vt's and I don't notice any fume's comming back into the passenger area..

there was another thread about this no too long ago. Out the corners or side eliminates the 'fume vacuum' effect of the lo-pressure zone behind SUV's. That zone is the same thing that makes drafting behind big-riggs possible (did that in west TX for about 100 miles @ 80mph: got 30mpg!). Another remedy is a spoiler: they are designed to help keep the back window cleaner longer, but help with fumes too. Everyone has noticed how awfully dirty the back end gets on SUV's and Blazers.

Most exhaust shops know not to run them straight out the back on an SUV. They woudn't run them out the side on my old '79 either because I had side sliders. But the Customer is always right and Cash is King!
