Another RPO code request
I have just purchased a '87 jimmy and while waiting for some pieces to arrive i thought I would check into the RPO codes to see what options were selected when new. I have gone through just about every post mentioning RPO codes and have deciphered most of them, but I still have a few left overs that I cannot seem to find. Can anyone translate these last 3 for me please?

Re: Another RPO code request
That is odd your SPID does not have friendly name descriptions.

Re: Another RPO code request
So it turns out the first code was XUZ which is the front tire size 31x10.5R15, still coming up blank on the 23D and 29K codes.

It was structured this way so that a customer could buy different rear tires than front tires (and different spare, too). K

Re: Another RPO code request
I found an old booklet in my drawer from 1998 (about 10 years newer than I would have liked).
It does not show a 23D, but it does show 23C a couple times for a couple different trim combinations (blue cloth). Similarly, no 29K but there is a 29L which is a "secondary color" - also blue. Maybe 29E would be a better example which is also a blue cloth trim code. The info packet in the GM Heritage Center archive shows code 29 as an available exterior color - Midnight Blue. I do not see a 23 code anywhere for interior or exterior. K https://www.gm.com/content/dam/compa...olet-Truck.pdf https://www.gm.com/content/dam/compa...t-Suburban.pdf

All square SUVs were built in Flint (as supported by the OP's SPID, which shows a VIN code of H = 1987 model year F = Flint Assembly plant 500xxx = sequential portion of VIN) So - to summarize - two vehicles built in the same model year in the same assembly plant down two different lines: two different SPID styles. Mine's a Chevy, his is a GMC. Maybe that's the difference? Or maybe when during the model year it was built? Mine was built in September of '86. K

Another thing you could do would be to send away to the Heritage Center for your original build invoice. That would tell you all the build codes (and I assume option names), time built, original selling dealership, pricing, etc. It was $50 when I did mine. K

Line 2 was Blazer/Suburban specific, but both Chevrolet and GMCs went down the same line. Similarly, Line 1 was specific to pickups only, but both Chevrolet and GMC pickups went down that same line. GMCs were about 1 out of every 9 builds. Chevrolet VIN sequence started at 100001 and GMC VIN sequence started at 500001 for this particular year. Quote:
It is not the order number, since that appears at the bottom. I also know it is not the build sequence number, because my sequence number ends in "87". I don't have any guesses beyond that, unless it is some kind of vehicle indicator from before the General Assembly build sequence was established (Flint has the opportunity to shuffle builds around after body shop/before paint, and again after paint but before trim). Yes - I could imagine there would be an "order invoice" as well, perhaps generated from any hand written or early worksheets generated while working directly with the customer. K

No additional paint, at least in the normal process. All the fender attaching bolts should be either black or cadmium silver. (one vertical bolt at the a pillar, one horizontal bolt in side the door, one horizontal bolt at the bottom of the fender dog leg - shot outboard from the pit - and about 7 at the nose of the fender to the radiator support). I suppose if there was some paint repair going on out back some overspray could have gotten on some of the bolts. K

Re: Another RPO code request
Good Evening,
I have a 1985 K5 Blazer with Paint codes 29 Midnight Blue and 21 Lt Blue Metallic with the two tone package the Midnight Blue was the primary color and the Lt. Blue was the center body stripe. My code for 23D is for the LDD4 High Back Custom Cloth Seats (Blue) My code for 29K is for the paint code for the fiberglass top. (Midnight Blue) Look at the bottom of my glove box tag numbers showing on left and right side. I hope this helps. Last edited by rwjtexas; 01-27-2023 at 11:30 PM. Reason: add another picture |

23D "looks" like an interior code. For exterior colors "U" (or upper) is for the primary exterior color, like 29U. "L" (or lower) is for secondary colors (like the inset, or across the bottom) so "K" must be for the separate fiberglass top. For many years they were available only in black and white, but in later years became available in some limited body colors. K

Re: Another RPO code request
Mine is a mild textured finish. I am waiting on my second estimate for paint and body. The shop I am waiting on to advise price, tells me that they can place a textured coat back on it so I am good to go with that...

Re: Another RPO code request
I need to get my k5 top painted. I've thought about having it sanded smooth and then epoxy primer and then paint. A smooth finish while not stock maybe more durable.

Re: Another RPO code request
You are Correct Keith, there are YUZ and ZUZ codes stating the same tire size
