As the title states, how difficult is it to install the windshield and back glass?

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
I did my back glass and with the proper tool, it wasn't bad at all.
On the wind shield, I chose to have the glass company do it. The guy who Put it in took about 30 minutes and it was done. He used a rope to get it in.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
It's not that bad of a job, I've done 3 windshield/back glass installs, all on 60-63's, and never had a problem. Like anything else, take your time, have a helper available, and good seals, like those from Steele Rubber, not the import crap the truck suppliers sell. Make sure the lip on the cab is in good shape and clean. Use a ton of lube. There's plenty of guidance available on here, and YouTube video's.

I paid a husband and wife team who restore old cars and such to do both the front and back, $225.00. I supplied the glass & Gaskets. Took them about an hour.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
Prior to installing the windshield in my 64 I purchased the new glass ( China ) , bought a good USA gasket , read all the treads and watched YouTube videos. Thought I would have it installed in a half hour. 4 days later it was in. My experience was that the windshield aftermarket glass was a little off from the proper size / shape . I used small diameter paracord and bought a cheap suction cup glass holder from harbor freight. That was the ticket, I was able to pull on the glass from inside the cab and it finally went in. Take your time and you'll get it.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
I did both my windshield and back glass (large window) on my 66. I can't say it was easy. As others have said, you need a helper and it is very handy to have suction cups from Harbor Frieght. I had the most trouble with the rear glass because the rubber puckered excessively at the corners. I put the glass in and out 3 times, and ended up breaking it taking it out for the third time because I was not satisfired with the rubber (Precision brand).
Since I had to buy a new back glass from LMC, I went ahead and ordered new rubber as well. The LMC rubber was narrower and worked perfectly the first time. No puckers on the corners. I know people like Precision products, but their back window rubber cost me alot of time and expense. |

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
I had a glass shop do my rear and they ripped the rubber, I ordered a new one and did it myself but it was a bear, order the right tools. My front has the stainless trim and I had it in and out 3-4 times, it's not bad.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
Window guys in my area won't re-use any old glass for installs anymore. They broke my old windshield on reinstall the first time around.
The windshield itself is a b!tch to install, I personally wouldn't wanna do it again. Back glass is a breeze, that one is no big deal, at least from my experience on 64-66 trucks.

I would pay the glassman to the front. It is way more expensive that the rear.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
I know this is old thread, but both front and rear glass need to be replaced on my 1965 C10 custom cab.
My insurance is going to cover it and one place the shop had me buy Steel brand gaskets then flaked out and never showed up, and I gave another chance and he made excuses, guess he couldn’t tell me he didn’t want the job. This was August 2020 after my glass was shot, front and rear glass, punks stabbed neighbor’s spare tire on his camper. Found someone else to do it, but said they can’t get rear window and will need to use laminated glass and “make wider gasket” since this glass is thicker, I’m wondering if that is going to look crappy. There are large back windows available, but they say they aren’t, maybe they are trying to save cost to increase profit, anybody know about laminated glass for back window? Want to get it fixed asap almost been 3 years. |

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
I meant to say the seal might look like crap, I had a Grand Am and windshield got replaced under insurance, used universal seal that was cut on ends and overlapped, it looked amateur like someone just bought some rubber strip at Home Depot and glued over the gap of windshield.
Started noticing friends cars that had windshield replacement with junky universal seal, I don’t want something like that on the truck, so I’m still looking around. Another place I called today said the rear glass isn’t available, maybe not from the wholesale place they get it from, gave me number of another place, guy texted me after 7pm he has rear glass, find out in morning, and will update. |

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
Mine was more difficult with the stainless trim. It was way worth the $200 a local shop charged me. Look for a shop with older guys that have done these before.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
I got the quote and am going to let insurance company know (I pay him and go to insurance to get reimbursed, want to make sure they agree to price) so he can order the glass, something weird in the email he asks me to not share the prices with anyone.

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
My wife helped me with the windshield and for us it was a pita. We had zero experience with auto glass but we finally got it done. My truck has the stainless trim which seems to make it more difficult. My grandson helped with the back glass and it was much easier.

1 of my Glazier tools... CRL on Amazon has them. This helps roll rubber and push on glass. "Bone"

Re: Windshield and back glass installation...how difficult?
They came yesterday and got the big back glass replaced but had issues with the chrome/stainless trim coming out of gasket on windshield when pushing glass into place, not sure what brand he was using so gave him my Steele brand gasket and he said it was about the same.
Coming back Monday with a 3rd hand to try again. Do I need a picture hosting website to upload pictures? |
