Newbie looking for his first truck - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am shopping around for my first classic truck, in fact I have had a full sized bronco in the past but never anything with a bed on it. And definately not a classic. I have heard Great things about working on/replacing parts on 67-72s but have not heard as much on the older chevys. In particular a 1959 with "1956 265 cu V8" . If need be would crate motors be avalible for this model? and how much more/less difficult are the older ones to work on?

Thanks for any advice, from what I can tell you are a great bunch of folks.

Not sure I understand what your asking, but I can tell you my thoughts on choosing the 67- 72 year truck over a 50s.Previous pick ups I have owed are a 55 Chevy a 60 Chevy and a 53 Ford
I like 67-72 ,One is drivability with not a lot of changes. These trucks, with coils all around ride very nice. As well as the later with rear leaf springs.
Disc brakes. Bigger cabs. Lots of custom and replacement parts. Wood beds if you want some oldie stuff or steel for useability.Lots of help like this board.Engine trans combos that make your head swim.Long beds short beds Fleetsides step sides Blazers Burbs.Have I missed anything.Oh ya and they have not got stupid on price ( yet)

Where are you at, and what will you be using the truck for?
If you are just cruising around, not 4x4ing, then I would suggest getting something with coils all the way around. The ride is quite a bit better.

Welcome from Central Mississippi. Like 71swb4X4 mentioned, we need to know where you are located in order to help you search. I have an 'extra' truck (72 Custom-10) that I would almost give you (priced in the lower hundreds) if you are close by that would be a good project.

Welcome to the board. I'd go with whatever body style you like, it just depends on how deep your pockets are....oh yeah, and how full they are

the only advice i have is the more you spend up front the less youll spend in the long run (if that makes since to anyone lol.........)

Good Point Meathead, I will remember that ( and yes I did chuckle a bit ).

As to the other questions, I am in the south east and dont plan on driving too much or for great distances. I will use it to get around my small town and back and forth to lowes to pick up stuff on the weekends. My primary car is a 93 Honda with 210k on it, and since I travel a lot for work it will stay that way no matter how many engines it goes through :-)

I really like the look of the older ones and found one I think I like a lot, but of course it is sight unseen. I will attach a pic below, they are only looking for 5 k for it.

sorry if this post is a little out of catagory but if there is something very bad about the older ones ( cant find parts anywhere, hard to find/rebuild engine etc...) I would like to know before I make a purchase.
