Score One '70 C10!

She's plain-jane, and won't compare with some of her Super Cheyenne BB/PS/PB/AC brothers & sisters, and doesn't technically have a stickshift, but I think she's a nice find anyway. This one is for my youngest son, soon to be 14. He's pretty proud of her!

'70 C10. About as stock as they come these days:

250 6 Cyl, never rebuilt.
3 spd column shift, smooth as ever.
Options: gauges, side moldings
154K miles
Purchased locally, absolute Oklahoma truck.
I'm the 3rd owner.
Runs great, could use a new clutch, burns a little oil.



The story is that the seller's grandfather purchased the truck new, and drove it until 1978. That's when he backed into an obstacle and put the only dent the truck has below the gas cap (where the trim is missing). Family made him stop driving shortly after, so grandson bought the truck and has driven back & forth to work every day since.



I've never seen docs like this for a 35 yr old truck. There's a perfect owner's manual, the original order sheet, dealer inspection checklist, warranty booklet with stamped plate attached, a neat Skelly Oil MPG calculator, all in the original plastic envelope.



The 1/4 plate steel toolbox was never bolted down (but stays put anyway!), and neither was anything else. Not a single hole in the bed or bedrails. Inside the toolbox was the original jack, handle, and lugwrench. Under that bed is the original bias-ply whitewall spare.



The interior has never seen radio nor speaker. Everything that's there works except the horn. The seat has been recovered and needs new springs.



Nothing special under the hood, but again, only basic tune-up stuff changed since new. I think we'll keep the six in this one. I've got a spare from the '69 we might build up for a little better performance, but I'll probably keep the original around.



The only rust on her are the tops of the rockers and the passenger wheelwell under the battery. Young son started polishing the paint out and it's coming back great. We'll probably just keep her that way, maybe paint the roof, bumpers and wheels just to spruce her up a little.

Anyway, thought you might like to see what's new, and offer your ideas on the best things to do. I know my son will be watching to see your suggestions! And if anyone has questions about what "came" on their truck, we might be able to help!

I'd do exactly what ya said with the paint. The only other thing I would do is fix the dent you pointed out and find a piece of trim. Well I'd probably find a way to hide a stereo in it, maybe the glove compartment. Then I'd have to pull the gas tank out and put a blazer tank out back with a fuel fill either in the bed or behind the rear marker light. Put some subs and a amp behind the seat, hehe. Yep, ya know how projects go, one thing after another. BTW, I don't think ya paid too much, Thats a nice truck.

That truck is almost identical to my truck except my truck has a V8 auto. My truck had red interior like yours but someone changed it out. I always wanted to see how it looks now that I see it, it don't look so bad. I might go back to red when I get to that point.

You mentioned the floormats look to be the original ones, is there any way that you could post a picture of the mats so that I can get a look at them? The truck is a good looking truck by the way, and no 1600 is not too much to pay for one that has "documented" history, in fact you prob. should look over your shoulder for a couple of weeks just in case thepolice get wind of the deal you made. LOL.

I have the cab trim that you are missing. I have two one for each side.
They are used but should match what you got.
The trim that I have is wood grain instead of the black (came off a GMC cab)
Complete with clips.

If that truck was here at the same price, I'd ask to borrow the guy's phone, call someone here at home to bring me money, ask the guy if I can borrow his shotgun, and make sure no one came within 10 feet of it :P

That's a good clean truck for the price...good find. Put some chrome rims on her and some chevy side mirrors (ones on there look like #ord) and your set.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, and we appreciate the ideas. The good news is that there's a couple of years before he can drive (at least legally ), so we have time to do it right.

On the price, I got another confirmation tonight that I did OK. The local co-op paper has a Cheyenne Super, short wide, 350/350, PS, PB, AC, factory AM/FM, "professionally restored", for just $16,500. I can, of course, provide the phone number if you're feeling rich...

Big J, that may not be a bad idea (although moving the tank looks like a big job), since we'll probably need to pull the tank to get the dent out anyway. Here's a better shot of the wound.



Orange70chevy, my son likes the red and plans to keep it. We picked up a set of early 90's seat/shoulder belts today, and the red pretty much matches the seats. Wonder why no one sells red replacement steering wheels?

Krue, I plan to monitor his driving by how long the clutches hold out.

Hutch, Muchos Gracias, man - you can't beat an offer like that. Before I put you to the trouble, can someone tell me if the wood grain can be removed and replaced with the black? For that matter, some of the black has faded - what do we use to repaint with?

dtlilly - Yeah, those mirrors are junk. Too bad the holes will be left. They won't even stay in place in the wind, so we definitely need to do something. I like big mirrors, tho, so we'll have to look at options.

BTW everyone, here's another pic of the bumper, which has a feature I haven't seen before. Check out the notch for safety chains. With the right size chain, don't even need a hook! Hadn't seen that before.

I had a bumper like that on my 70. It works good with a 3/8 or 5/16 chain.

Thanks for the pics. You don't want to sell the mats do you????? Figured i would ask, But if you do pm me a price, I know I'm being a little, ok alot forward, but those are the first ones I have seen... By the way does the bumper actually have the emblem "safety bumper" on it, that has to score major cool points, again never saw that before. Great first truck, my first truck was a 72 Cheyenne my dad did for me. Sure had alot of cool times in that truck and I'm sure your son will have as much fun in his. Harold

Sweet Score!......I like the clutch measuring idea....but hes not givin a fair chance if its already slipping...lol. It'll probably get replaced when he begs for the 8 Great first truck for him though, my buddy and I both started with C20's, sticks, no power steering, I at least have power brakes, combined with the way alaska roads are kept in winter makes for a good break in to driving. Love the bumper, I can't remember where I saw one before but it was when I was still living in WI. Nice steal anways

Don't worry - I wouldn't do that to him. He'll get a new clutch before he starts driving it full time. I don't think the current one will last another year if I drive it regularly, which I plan to do.

Right now, he's being real particular about keeping the truck original - doesn't even want to put the spare 250 in it (rebuilt, of course).

Harold, PM Sent. I think the sticker is gone on both sides, but the remaining rust patterns are pretty legible.

Looks like a pretty nice truck, esp for a first rig.
Those mirrors do look like ford pieces, but I'll bet they are Auto Zone generic replacement units. I see too many of these on non fords to think they all came from a donor ford.
The original documents are a pretty cool addition too. You oughta pull the seat out and check for a build sheet shoved up in the seat cusion. The cool thing about the protecto-plate, (the metal thing on the booklet) is that you can attempt to look up the original owner. I found the widow of the first owner of my old blue Longhorn...it had lots of papers, some that you have, some that you don't. (window sticker, recall papers, waranty book, owners manual, hand written invoice...I think that's it)
As for the engine swap, you could put your spare 250 in there as it sits, and rebuild he original. That way it has a fresh motor AND it is original to the truck.

That's exactly what I'd like to find for my son. 6 cyl truck, heavy and not to quick. I've been threatening that his first rig is going to have a pull start anyway.
