Trans selector switch

My '89 K1500 got side-swapped parked on the street a couple of years ago and I've had it on non-op since then. The left tail light was broken. The damage was not severe visually but a lot of parts were damaged that weren't obvious. I replaced the taillight lenses and circuit boards with the newer design. My darn backup lamps aren't working. They flash a bit when the selector lever is moved to the R pos. That led me to the trans selector switch at the base of the steering column. It's marked 22509632 which may have been superseded with a part no. 22514861. It looks like it might snap on in place somehow since I didn't see any mounting screws. Has anyone replaced that part? I don't want to break it trying to remove the darn thing.

Re: Trans selector switch

Pretty sure the switch is adjustable. Sounds like it's a little off.

It doesn't look like it. No mounting screws I saw. I could be wrong but it's in the twenties outside and I won't look at it again until later tomorrow.

Re: Trans selector switch

I've got an '89 as well, and I had to replace that switch after I broke the actuating tab off while disassembling the steering column a couple of months ago. Anyway, it just snaps into the column without any screws. It is adjustable by pushing the outer portion of the body left or right. It will make little ratcheting/clicking sounds as you adjust it.

Thanks for that fact. I probably would've damaged it without that knowledge. As it was I tried adjusting it in two click increments and I still didn't get lights. Perhaps the switch is bad. The tail/ brake lights are good.

Re: Trans selector switch

There's a specific way to adjust it, with a certain size drill bit inserted into a hole. I usually put it in neutral and move it until the lights come on.

Re: Trans selector switch

I've had to set this problem aside for a while. The weather is getting better and it's time for my truck. Is there a trick to removing this switch from the base of the steering column? I don't want to break it.

Re: Trans selector switch

There are two large fingers on the side of the switch that's facing the firewall. These two fingers are snapped into two small rectangular holes in the column housing. Use a small screwdriver to pry the fingers out of the holes. There are also two very small tabs on the side of the switch away from the firewall that hook onto the edge of the large slot on the column housing. You can rotate these tabs out after the fingers are released.

I bought it at a local parts store. O'Reilly sells them.
