Who has stripped their truck to bare metal w/o media blasting?
I'm not gonna have the cab media blasted this time. Need to save some $ for other restoration parts. Not in a hurry.
Just wondering how anybody did the inside of a '69 cab, mostly in the cab corner areas. Thanks. |

I used 3" scotch pads on an air angle grinder and 4" pads on an electric ginder , it's no fun stripping it all down to bare metal over your head .

Re: Who has stripped their truck to bare metal w/o media blasting?
Didn't someone ask something like this here recently?
I don't see how you would ever get it all without some type of blasting. You can see coatings left in low areas on grumpys pictures. May not matter if what is left is well adhered and not effected by whatever you spray on top of it. I did a combination of sandpaper, 3m stripping disc and got the details with blasting... I did not have to do the inside of my cab corners, because I replaced enough of the cab corner and outer floor that it was all new metal. |

Re: Who has stripped their truck to bare metal w/o media blasting?
i used old fashioned hardware store paint stripper and steel wool(and gloves) to do parts of my truck.i discovered after buying about 6 different brands of paint stripper, that nowadays,it's all junk.i remember a 100 years ago using that stuff,if you splashed a little on your arms,it'd burn like like the blazes.this crap now is like thick water.not much good but i didn't do a complete truck, only some panels.

I see the "Ultra" now is designed to remove 2k paints. It might be better than the standard crap. If the cab is off the chassis, beg, borrow or steal a roto and turn it on it's side. You can then stand in the door opening and sand without it overhead. If the corners are stubborn, get a spot blaster for those areas. If a person is concerned about the small amount of rust left in pits, today's 2k primer/sealers will stop that from growing. |
