It could be anything causing a crack and if it is in an original crossmember it may have started a long time ago. Even if it has a subframe the crack could be an issue from that unit's prior life.
On the other hand, I bet dollars to donuts that some guys on here wouldn't drive on the highway that you drive on to get to the road that you go up to his place. He is 79.3 miles from me the shorter twisty way or 95.7 the longer straighter but still twisty way. No 30 ft wide Texas style bar ditches on those roads either. The roads in that area while fun can be a bit hard on equipment.
