Broken front cross member, repair or replace?
After working most of the winter my 54 was almost back on the road. Today I took it to the muffler shop (on the trailer) as he was working he found a crack in the front cross member. Now what to do replace or repair. When I bought the truck in pieces,10 years ago the IFS was done, using good parts? I don't know, but appears not

I would take it to a good welder and ask his thoughts. if you have a pic that would be great. we would be looking at where the crack is located and why it is there in the first place. stress crack, poor part, accident damage, something else?

Re: Broken front cross member, repair or replace?
What crossmember and broke where?
As many times as I have been around that truck and taken photos of it I have no idea of what front suspension it has. I'm always game for a trip over the pass and if you need another set of eyes to look at it I can make a run down there.

Re: Broken front cross member, repair or replace?
It could be anything causing a crack and if it is in an original crossmember it may have started a long time ago. Even if it has a subframe the crack could be an issue from that unit's prior life.
On the other hand, I bet dollars to donuts that some guys on here wouldn't drive on the highway that you drive on to get to the road that you go up to his place. He is 79.3 miles from me the shorter twisty way or 95.7 the longer straighter but still twisty way. No 30 ft wide Texas style bar ditches on those roads either. The roads in that area while fun can be a bit hard on equipment.
