Congrats on your new find. These old pickups are very addictive.

Also glad that you enjoyed our build thread.

Thanks

Re: 72 Cheyenne K10 SWB Numbers Matching

redbaron you have done an incredible job on this truck. I have to say this is the best looking K10 I've seen. I will be keeping an eye out for this when I'm in the Magic Valley. Hoping to start a build thread on my truck here soon that I inherited from my late father in law. Who did your powder coating?

Thanks Rick

Hello Rick,

Thanks for the compliments. Hope to have time to enter it in the Joe Mama show in August. We drive it around some and really enjoy it on the highway. We'll run into each other at some point.

Please tell more about your ride.

Buck over at Magic Valley Powder Coating did a wonderful job on the coating.

Thanks, Mike

Mike

My trucks a 72 short step. My father in law was about half way through building it when he passed away. Before he went in for surgery he asked me if I would finish it if anything happened to him, and that's what I'm going to do. Was hoping to have it finished in time to take it to the show in jackpot in the fall, but don't think that's going to happen this year. Hoping to get time this weekend to get my pics uploaded and my build thread started.

Did you have any sand blasting done? I need to have the bed stripped and not sure where to go.

Thanks Rick

Looking forward to your build thread Rick.

Jason Pendleton does most of the classic car blasting over here. He has a lot of experience and uses whatever medium provides the best results. I thought I had his number programmed in my phone but couldn't find it. Buck at Magic Valley Powder Coating has his number. Jason lives in Eden and usually blasts on Kimberly road about a mile south of the Hansen bridge.

Mike, what gear ratio are you running? And how do you like it with those 33's. I'm getting close to getting my tires and have been thinking about going with 33's vs the 35's. I have 3.73 gears and definitely don't want to change them. 35's will clear, with what I have for lift but would be close to hitting the front if I hit a bump just right when I turn.

Hey Brian,

I like my 33s with the 3.73 and turbo 350 that my pickup has. On the interstate where our speed limit is 80 it revs a little high at 3100 rpm. With 35s at 80 the rpm would be around 2950. Today everyone is accustom to lower rpm with overdrive transmissions, but for most of the driving I do in mine I like it just the way it is. Hope this helped you.

Thanks... Yes It does help. so, it sounds like you have the same setup that I would have if I go 33's. I also have a turbo 350 and 3.73 gears. I can't really see where I'll be going 80 too often, but good to know where the rpm range would be. Not really that much different than what the 35's would be. The smaller tires might even be a little easier on the driveline and better in town driving.

In reality my truck should never see mud again. Maybe a sand dune, but that's probably even iffy. I put my old 35's under it the other day and they would probably work, but it was close in the front corner. I could use the zero rate's to move it back a half inch though if need be. The inch of ground clearance I'd loose with 33's isn't going to be an issue for me. I actually think the 35's fill the wheel well a bit too much (for my personal liking).

Probably my biggest hesitation is that on your truck, the 33's look PERFECT. Not too small and not too big. Looking over other pictures on this bb, I see some with similar lift and 33 x 12.50's and they look small. Seems hard to explain.

I've already gone against my better judgement and put on step bars to help so the wife and kid will be able to climb in. I measured to the cab floor when the 35's where on there and it was something close to 32 inches. Quite a stretch for sure. One inch lower will help even more I suppose.

It eases my mind to know that the gear/tire combo is working well for you. Thanks again.

RedBaron, Great truck and pictures. I'm restoring a 71 GMC that would be a cousin to your truck. All of the pictures are going to be of great aid to me as I am starting the rebuild process now. Frame, suspension, engine, tranny and transfer case are all rebuilt and back in freshly powdered coated frame.

Thank you Tim. Looks like you are coming right along on your cool GMC.

Don't know if you noticed on mine where the rear tires were moved back some. In the current Boise Roadster Show picture the wheels are pushed back by a 3/4" back centering pin locator hole. Pictures prior to that the hole was back 1.5", which was to far back. The 3/4" back hole is perfect for positioning the tire in the center of the wheel wells. I'll try to get some new pictures taken and posted on here for all.

Re: 72 Cheyenne K10 SWB Numbers Matching

redbaron, your right, the rear wheels need to be centered. How did you do that, did you modify the spring or change the hole location on the perch that the spring sits on? Also, I can't see any of the exhaust system in any pictures except for the manifolds. How did you finish out your exhaust system? I love your truck, I've already referred back to your post/pictures several times as I work on my project.

The top spring is the locating spring. I believe the top spring is 52" long with the center hole in the middle, making it 26" each way from center. By moving the hole back 3/4" the axle is moved back that far. Spring steel can't really be drilled, so i think the spring companies punch the holes. I had Alcan build all the springs on the K10. When orderings from them they will find out what you intend to do with your individual vehicle and then build them accordingly. Alcan is second to none. Not sure if they would make one top locating spring for a person or not.

The exhaust is tucked nicely along the frame and exits out the rear even with the back bumper. It's basically hidden. We used Magnaflow mufflers and I love the sound. If we ever get our hoist freed up I'll take pictures and post them.

We have been busy doing a lot of rust repairs on a 71 Blazer for a customer and are getting started on our 72 C10 SWB Cheyenne project. The Roadster Shop Fast Track frame arrived about 2 weeks ago for it. What a jewel. Need to find time to start a build thread for this crazy ride.

Thanks for the compliments.

Haven’t posted on this thread for years.
Currently showing the truck at C10 Nationals in Salt Lake City.
Will put up more recent pictures and pictures of it at the show later.
