Compressor choices
Hey everyone, I’m in the market for a new compressor. Anyone have any suggestions? I have had a 5hp single stage for the last 30 yrs and want to upgrade to a 7.5 two stage. So far the Quincy 7.5 2 stage with attached cooler and the champion with the same stats have caught my eye. Anyone have any input on these or others with good track record.

That Quincy is a commercial paint shop unit but if it is within the budget and fits your needs It should more than get the job done.

Robert which polar air do you have?
Mr 48 that’s kind of where I’m going with my question. The 7.5 two stage may be over kill, and I may be fine with a 5hp two stage. My 5hp single stage got me through 30 yrs but was lacking a bit on cfm.

I built a "franzinator" which is on Garage Journal if you want to remove moisture. It's 240v, single phase.

I recently got an old emglo 17 gal single stage 4 piston and it fills its 17 gal and my attached 80 gal from dead empty in FOUR MINUTES with an astounding 18cfm@100psi. they are still around under the name Jenny and make stationary 80gal setups, I always figured I would give one a shot because this 30 year old compressor is quiet as a mouse and just works all day long. the website is archaic and you have to find a model number and google the price (mine was a whopping 3k for the current model) but holy cow is it a nice unit.

Added an additional 30gal of capacity to the 30gal single stage on my setup 3 weeks ago. I had seen vids of people modding their compressors, and the one that really caught my eye was the cooler with a water separator. Used a Derale 15300 cooler and a cheap Walmart 12" fan to blow across thats wired to come on when running. Amazing how it cools the hot air. Can barely touch the tube out of the compressor before the cooler, but very cool after. Creates an atmosphere to create moisture to get trapped by the separator. Painted a week ago without issue in 100*F. Love it. Might just replace the compressor head when it fails...one of these days.
BTW. 110v 2HP. Small, but works.

whatever you decide ensure you get one that has parts available easily. I bought an ingersol rand 5hp 2 stage 80 gal with decent output and it keeps up to my blast cabinet and small pot sandblaster BUT it runs all the time when blasting, gets hot and does drop in pressure somewhat. I wanted to do a valve service and possibly a rering while it is apart and found it was a one off and parts are either not available or they come from somewhere far far away with a big price tag. valve servicing is something that should be done every so often because they get some build up on the valve seats and rings, well, they just wear out with use. mine is a siamese twin cyl style so the heat from one cyl dissipates into the next cylinder. maybe a v unit would have been better, dunno. the 2 stage part is a smaller cylinder normally and the connecting tube should have cooling fins and possibly a drain. some have a cast cooler unit that is used instead for that purpose and they have drains on them. another thing to look for is the size of the inlet pipe where the air filter is. on mine i thought that pipe could have been a little larger. I have mine sitting close to my breaker panel, for a short run to the compressor motor and my shop service is large enough with no problem when running. it does use more power on start up though so something to check on if you plan to go with a 7hp. then the air inlet goes through a flexible 3" rubber hose connection to pvc piping that goes through the cieling to a vehicle air box in the attic. easy to find filters for that box, the filters are larger than the stock filter that came with the compressor, the unit picks up air that is likely cleaner than the ambient shop air since the compressor is close to my work bench where the grinding happens, and the attic air intake is also less noise in the shop. in the winter the attic is cold so the compressor picks up more dense air that has less moisture in it than the warm shop air. my compressor has a timed auto drain unit at the bottom that is connected to the shop lights so if i am in the shop the lights are on and the compressor auto drains into a catch bucket so no water/oil mess on the floor or atomised where you are working/breathing.
anyway, i suppose by now you have purchased a compressor. if so, what did you end up with? |

Excuse the extra metal laying over the pic but I picked up a cheap Wallyworld 12" fan, it blows thru a Derale trans cooler, and over the compressor head. It cools the air tremendously.
Now if it's 95*+ outside, it helps a little bit.......a bit

I run a 60 gal. 220V and a 20 gal. 110V together. The 20 kicks on first and the 60 kicks in if needed.

So this is what I ended up buying. It’s my usual overkill but I wanted to make sure the hubby and I could both work on projects at the same time. It’s the emax 7.5 silent air pressure lubricated model.

Wow, that is a beast. It might even keep with runnin a sand blast cabinet for serious lengths of time. That's the hardest work an air compressor will do as you basically cut the end off an air hose and let it go when you are running a sandblast cabinet.

That should take care of all your needs. I have a smaller Ingersoll Rand. The best thing I done was route my pipe similar to how TP tools suggest in this PDF. I have no moistures issues like I did before. I have a Harbor Freight compressor pump. It will produce 19cfm, more than enough to run my sand blaster booth. I found 3 used 60gal air tanks and I bought a 5hp electric motor for $20.00 at a yard sale. then mounted everything outside, and plumbed it thru the wall. nice and quite.

dang norcalgal, that's a sweet compressor! you can never go wrong with more cfm and the new quiet compressors are a necessity, mine hangs out in a closet underneath the stairs to muffle the racket. now put a timer or a wifi plug on that mag starter so you never have to go back out to the shop becuz the compressor is running.
