Steering Column help

I'm rebuilding the non-tilt Automatic column on my 72 GMC c15, but cobbling together one from two partials. I need help with the steering wheel end. I need to know what goes after the upper bearing. I have a spring, washer, horn ring, and then the nut. Does all of this go on there? Am I missing anything? Is there a different order? Any help is appreciated.

Based on that, all I need is the horn ring, and I'm golden. It just puzzles me what holds the steering shaft in place when it's not connected to the steering arm in the engine compartment? I figured there would be something.

Are you talking about the shaft from the column to the steering gear?

Nah, the steering shaft inside the column. How is it held in there? (thanks for the reference threads, btw)

The horn contact ring gets clamped against the upper bearing by the steering wheel. The lower bearing gets held in place by that spring in your second picture. The spring pressure is what holds the steering shaft in position.

There is a spring on the lower end that holds pressure against the upper bearing (the best I remember).

One column had a spring up top. I think I've got the setup correct. I'll finish my welding on the dash and the put that refurb'd column in. Thanks for the links and information to guide me on this.
