Adding a couple tie downs in the box, any ideas?
My pick up was a municipal pick up in Wyoming for most of it's life. Appears to have lead a comfy life. The previous owner replaced the oak bed with new oak, unfinished, which is exactly how I would have done it. The bed doesn't have a single hook, or tie down spot in it anywhere. In the two years I've owned it, I've only wished for tie down fixtures 5 or 6 times (I have other ways to move heavy stuff). Most of the time, I'm carrying bags of critter food, fertilzer and what not. Be nice to add a couple small cleats on each side. I'm just having real pause drilling the box (like it was going to make it bleed or something). So far, I think something like four of these. What have you done?

These are the best d-ring I have ever used so far in the link below.
They have to have room or the 4 3/8-inch recess. So they may not be what you're looking for. I like them been recessed and they are durable. Link: https://www.etrailer.com/Tie-Down-An...hy/RR6K-4.html

Looking for these somewhere closer than China.... I could replace four of the bolts that attach the fenders (front and back bolt on each fender) they would be about perfect location too. Anyone know where I could find them?

This may not be of much help, but I've gone to a local junkyard and looked/found some solutions to problems like yours. It's also nice taking old stuff off of old trucks knowing it was well made and well used.

Re: Adding a couple tie downs in the box, any ideas?
Pic of my 68 bed. I needed tie downs for coolers and chairs. So I bought some 5/16" I bolts. I replaced the stock bed bolts with the I bolts. No drilling. Worked well. The I bolts are at the front of the block.

Re: Adding a couple tie downs in the box, any ideas?
Gottem! Just what I wanted! $15.00 at Amazon for all four.
1/4" DIAMETER BLACK STEEL DELTA RINGS (Replacements for Pan Fitting Cargo Tie-Down Anchor) These small black V rings are intended for use with the D ring plastic floor mount base we sell. In case that D ring gets compromised, it is easy to replace with a reliable and durable alternative. These V-rings can also be used alone, as many have done. These 2-1/8" x 2" Delta rings have an inner clearance of 1-1/2" x 1-5/8" (large enough for most S hooks). Bolt them down with one screw or bolt through the 13/32" diameter bolting hole in the mounting bracket attached to the rings. Then you can anchor your motorcycle tiedowns, tarp straps and bungee cords, soft loops, ropes, cables, extension cords, ratcheting straps, cam buckle straps, to secure camping gear, ATV, bikes, furniture, and other cargo. These rings weigh 1.5 pounds each, and each packs an incredible assembly break strength of 3,000 pounds and a working load limit of 1,000 pounds. Please note that D rings should be used as cargo tie-down anchors only and are not intended for overhead lifting. |

Re: Adding a couple tie downs in the box, any ideas?
It all depends on how crazy you are for the finish. My paintjob is 55 years old, so I don't care. I have a '68 C/10 Stepside [in 516 Orange] and whenever I need to tie down a load, if it comes over the bed wall height, I hook the S hook of a ratchet strap into the roll of wall lip and cross over the bed to the same point on the other side. Sometimes diagonal from Right front to Left rear. Sometimes straight across. All depends on the load. Three or four 1'' ratchets are all you need.
Another trick is to stretch a poly tarp over the load in the bed. Then using tarp-grabbers in 4 corners and across the middle [6] , I hook a bunji thru the Grabber and hook the bunji hooks under the roll. It will hold a tarp over the load at freeway speeds -- even keeping the stuff underneath relatively dry. Obviously it's not waterproof. If some sections billow under a fast wind, I put a ratchet strap across the bed laterally. I do not have a fancy oak bed. The OEM pine bed is pretty shaky at 55 y.o. with the last 50 in the Arizona sun. Usually I put a fresh sheet of 3/4'' marine grade plywood down for a deck. Lately it has a false floor of vinyl faux wood kitchen flooring. It was free. This is a Truck, not a showroom queen.

Re: Adding a couple tie downs in the box, any ideas?
They came in the mail today.. EZ-PZ fifteen minute to install with a bud operating the impact, and me on the floor...
I questioned how strong they were (looking at the ad) until I saw that they weigh 1.5lbs. They are stout, they'll hold down anything I will put in the old girl. |
