Ps
I think the true '67 PS had a ram system, similar to the corvette. My '67 has a transplanted pump & box from a later year. I have a complete changover "kit" from a '72 for $115 shipped if you're interested......Zoomy

The last response is correct. The original power steering system on 67 pick up's was unique to that year only. The system was almost identical to the slave cylinder style power steering on corvettes up till 83 or so. I have actually rebuilt 67 slave cylinders with corvette rebuild kits, but the esiest retro would be to go with 68-72 style pump & gear.

I had a '67 K/10 4x4 Suburban that I tried putting a '69 PS set up on. Ran into big problems. Steering geometry was AFU: I had to start my left turns from the middle lane or I'd wind up on the sidewalk. Right turns were a little easier, but it was like docking the Queen Mary to parralel park. Also the PS gear was really strong and I broke a couple of 1/2" frame mounting bolts when there was more force than travel. Also shifted spring perch on drivers side. Didn't know about the Corvette trick at the time. Finally went back to Armstrong System, but since we had to cut and weld the original draglink, the geometry was never the same. Bought a '75 Dana 44 front axle so I could switch to later style PS system and also have power disc brakes. Project is down awaiting more cash.

'68OrangeSunshine, the problem you most likely had was there was supposed to be a dimple in the frame for the later power steering box, and yours was probably installed with spacers or shims to make it bolt up. This places center, a little off center on the gear, and causes all kinds of problems. It also sounds like you used a later box with the variable rate gear which would make things worse.

The gear box came off a '69 GMC c/1500 panel that a guy was parting out. The pump assy was a later model as they were reputedly more reliable. [Of course just because it came off a '69 doesn't mean it's actually that vintage.] We did use a lot of shims. This occurred a couple of years before I found this board. Which has become an addiction in itself. I just know that '67 is a trouble year for PS, especially in a 4x4.
