Okay this isn't really a 'painting' question.. so that's why I'm posting it here instead of in "Paint & Body"
I have four steel VW wheels that I am going to repaint for my bug. They need paint all over, with some special attention to the bead and lip area. The prep work I have done, and the rattle-can paint I'm sure will be fine. What I want to know is... when do I have the tires mounted? Should I completely paint the wheels and hope the tire shop doesn't scrape the paint off while mounting the tires? OR Should I have the tires mounted (but not aired up or balanced) onto the bare wheels... then paint the wheels? Thanks for any help you can give ![]() PS: Mike (fine69) I know you said just leave the inside... but after I wire wheeled and sand blasted them... I want to do a good job with them.

Most mounting machines have a nylon (?) end that doesn't do much damage to the finish. I'd paint 'em up then have the tires mounted.

if you paint them with the tires on, you better make really sure that you don't get ANY paint on the tires or else you've got some scrubbing to do and it'll look ugly if you don't get that paint off.

I say paint 'em first inside and out, and let it cure for at least a week, depending on the type of paint you're using, if you can wait. If they get a scratch or two at the tire shop just touch it up.

I paint all my wheels bare, let them cure for 24 hours, and mount the tires myself.
Use Goop hand soap on the tire bead and you can put them on the wheels by hand, no tools at all.

You can get them bead blasted and power coated fairly cheap at some of the major truck tire centers. I'm sure Knoxville has several in the area. Look for a Bandag recap center or a Bridgestone truck tire center. Here in Dallas I can get them done for $15.00 ea. They have different colors, black, red, white and silver.
