Headers or Ram Horns for 350 tbi conversion?
I'm doing a 1990 5.7 tbi/ 700R4 conversion in my frame off 68 C10. It was a 6 cyl/4sp. The engine has about 90k on it, out of a suburban. So far so good, have most of the swap done except harness and headers. I only have about 4" clearance on the drivers side between motor and frame, so I'm wondering if I should just go with ram horns? Or are there long tube headers that have hugger clearance, and don't cost $500? I would consider notching the frame too, if it's not too much.
Curious what you all recommend. I put new support and mounts on the front frame hole. Thanks. |

Unless you plan on running over 5000 rpm ram horns will make life much easier...just my .02 worth.

Thanks! It's just going to be a nice (and hopefully attractive) cruiser.

Re: Headers or Ram Horns for 350 tbi conversion?
You will miss the headers when they leak and cost extra to have exhaust made. Sarcasm of course!
I believe you can purchase 2.5" ram-horn manifolds from Frank at Pickumup trucks, and maybe others, that have the required bend in the bottom already attached. Or just stay with the stockers and move on and don't look back. I have a set of Stainless Steel Ebay block huggers for the LS. I believe they are available for the SBC also. Typically about $200. The Stainless is really thin and it makes them difficult to weld the exhaust to. But the header flange where it bolts up to the motor is substantial. No leaks there. The TIG welding is quite amazing. The welds are so good I was wondering if it was machine done? |
