Modify 283 air cleaner base HELP!!

Building a sleeper high hp 350 to look like a factory bone stock 283 in my 1964.

Since I haven't purchased a air cleaner yet
I'm Thinking of pulling the trigger on a original 1964 283 2 barrel air cleaner (eBay) and fab a carburetor hole that will fit my 5"1/8" quadrajet. Any suggestions on which base maybe able to work or has someone pulled this fab off?

I machine a adapter out of brass to go from 5 1/8" to 4" + for the early 4 barrel air cleaners on top of my edelbrock. Or you can cut an weld.

No need to buy a 2-barrel one.. the 283/327 repops have 4 3/8" opening for factory 4-barrel carbs. You can do adapter from there.

Found a adaptor and risers that look like they'll work even though they're plastic?! thanks Fellas

Those adapter assume you have a smaller carb throat and are using a larger air cleaner base.
What if you want to do the opposite? Use a newer carb (5-1/8" carb throat) and want to use an older air cleaner. I don't think those adapters will work.

You're exactly right, they won't work. Maybe have to go plan B and weld. thanks

Re: Modify 283 air cleaner base HELP!!

Here is an option if you want to buy one pre-made:

Air cleaner assembly with 5" base

They also sell just the base if you already have a lid:

5" base with 1" vent

And they also offer bases with various size carb openings with & without the vent tubes.
Here is the complete listing --> http://www.dr409.com/02_Engine_Ext_1.html (scroll down to the "Air Cleaners, Small Block Reproduction" and "Air Cleaner Parts" sections)

Would that 5" base fit a Edelbrock Carb?

Show Cars says on their site that the 5" air cleaners are for use with "aftermarket AFB" carburetors ... which is basically what the Edelbrock carbs are.

I believe they're simply rounding off the measurement to 5" even though the Edelbrock & Q-Jet carbs are actually 5-1/8". Similarly, they list the air cleaners that fit the stock Rochester 4gc carbs as 4" even though those are actually something like 4-7/32".

Re: Modify 283 air cleaner base HELP!!

Another solution might be to simply use a base from a filter that fits, and drop the early air cleaner lid over the top and tighten it down.

Re: Modify 283 air cleaner base HELP!!

If you have some welding skills, just cut the center out of the 2 barrel base, bend up some sheet metal to the height and diameter you need, then weld it up. That's what we did with mine when I went to a Quadrajet. I did have to make it tall enough to clear the HEI dizzy

Looks like the link Ray posted a couple years ago is no longer active, but I did find this from I believe the same place. Maybe this could work for you? https://show-cars.com/product/1952

They also have a lot of other air cleaner stuff available: https://show-cars.com/02-engine-external

This is basically what I did, 2 barrel original on a i think 10" cheap china aircleaner bottom and a K&n filter sloped out to the original. A little shaping the bottom half and works great on a quadrajet

Pretty much what I did. Had the cheap open filter base and put my stock base over it and was happy it worked. This thread is pretty old so I am sure they solved their problem already.

The thread was older & they likely did solve their problem but a new question that is related was asked just days ago (8/14/23)....

I used a squarebody era 4bbl Q-jet GM truck air cleaner base & made it work by trimming/cutting the vertical portion off the base plate of the air cleaner housing.

I ended up using a base from an older 4 barrel gm air cleaner and got a spacer from the junkyard for a newer quadrajet . Cut/weld in place
