The gas tanks on my motorcycles are pretty much in my lap. I try to be a careful driver, but you can't drive for the other person.
Not a fan of belly tanks. I have a GMC JIMMY and once had a '67 K/10 Suburban. Both factory equipped with rear tanks. Hard to fill. Won't take the gas nozzle at full blast, they back uo and shut down the valve. You have to slip the gas down the neck like pouring beer into a tall glass.
Then there's getting fuel to the carb.
Back of seat tank has none of these problems.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?

I've never moved the tank from original location because I see no need to. But I do have a Blazer tank kit I'm thinking to use on my '67 short bed as an auxiliary tank

Kind of dated, but I went a different route. Added a 29 gallon fuel cell in a DEE-CEE storage trunk. Some thought it was unique.

That's a heck of a locking gas cap and 29 gallons!

If you can just take it all out.
Sure there is no gain or such benefit if you don't value safety.

One thing I did not catch been mention was you can not hide the spare tire if you relocate the tank under the bed.

Good Luck...

This is a genius idea and solves many of problems on both sides of the fence.
Plus, you don't have to drop the tank to replace the sending unit.

For those of you trying to make this a safety issue please stop. If it was such a damn hazard none of us would be driving these trucks because they would have all burnt up in the last 50 odd years. Every car fire I have ever seen involved the engine compartment. You know where there are things actually hot enough to ignite gasoline. Just admit that you moved it because that's what you wanted to do.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?

So leaving it in place and found the leak. Smoke test showed a leak around the sending unit. New seal and all good. Drive it 500-1000 each year with very limited freeway driving so not expecting a roof ride.

Past engineering is just old engineering without experience and knowledge. Just admit that it is something that was done in the past.

And it got the job done. no reason to reengineer stuff on a fifty plus year old truck. It's worked for fifty years it'll work another fifty.

Only by chance or my Lord willing that I did not die in my rollover accident in the 72 in my younger years. There is a reason changes happen. Gas tanks are no longer in the cabin.

You may have scared the **** out of yourself by rolling a vehicle but you are overstating the possibility of it catching on fire. You were way more likely to die in the rollover itself than for the vehicle to catch fire afterwards.
By far the greatest safety hazard in any vehicle is the loose nut behind the steering wheel. People would be better served by working on that.

Re: Move the gas tank or no?

I think we should agree to disagree....there is more than one way to skin a cat.
With that being said I installed a Boyd's tank under the bed and love it!
