The screws are either #8 or #10 by 1/2" long. Grab a half dozen of both sizes, you'll find a use for the left overs somewhere else on the truck.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal screws

#8 as stated above. The black one in the picture is the one used to secure the seal edge of the cowl. The shiny (polished stainless?) screw is used for the visible cowl screws. I think they are actually called pan head screws.

You would be correct on the pan head. I looked at my '72 and someone evidently replaced them with round head or the '72's are different. The stainless cowl screws are pan head on it but the cowl to firewall are round head. Dunno....

The cowl screws are the same ones used to affix the gb door hinge to the dash - grab one as an example.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal screws

Thanks for all the replies. The #8 x 1/2" screws worked perfectly. I had to get some washers for them also.

glad I found this thread, forgive me for resurrecting an old one, but my '71 girl took #10 screws and half of them were still loose as a goose

This gauge says #10. https://www.ebay.com/itm/27339713907...3-aO9ccudB_KQ1

Sometimes I think old #10 are a pinch smaller than new. It's a good idea to try #8 first, but I don't know, why does it seem new #8 door sill screws will install where the original screws were #10, the new paint?? Hmmm.

Never mind the #8 and 10 business, other then gr. 5 recessed hex head body bolts with spin washers, I believe..............

The cowl panel and seal mount to the cowl’s top using six phosphate #2 phillips pan head tap screws with spin washers. The screw threads are #10" x 5/8". Another option may have been phosphate recessed hex head screws with spin washers.

The cowl panel’s top rear mounts to the cowl with four stainless #2 phillips pan head tap screws and J-nuts. The screw threads are #10 x 1/2". The J-nuts are 1/2" (W) x 5/8" (T) with a 7/16" center hole to edge, and are stamped “P”.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal screws

Are these the screws being referenced in this thread? Would they have been painted body color or would they have been unpainted? If unpainted, what finish were they originally?

yes, these are the 4 out of 10, there's six more down lower where the hood meets the cowl, may be hidden under the rubber piece

Those should be stainless as stated in the post right before yours.

Thanks. When I posted that, I wasn't even sure I was referencing the screws in the same area. Also, wasn't aware GM would spring for stainless screws on these old trucks. I would've thought zinc. I guess if they're stainless, I should be able to remove the gold paint and clean them up pretty easily.

Re: Hood to Cowl Seal screws

BTW, is there suppose to be a "clip" on the receiving end, which the screw turns into, similar to the grill/headlight trim rings?

The upper stainless screws take J panel nuts, post 9. The phosphate cowl panel/seal screws tap the cowl.
