I have newly chromed bumpers ready to install on my 72 C10. I am a little confused about the bumper bolts. The bolts with the white head are the ones that were on the truck. The shorter chrome head one is what the chromer gave me with the rechromed bumper and these are chromed as well. The longer bolt is an NOS bolt t hat I had. Does anyone know which are the right bolts and why are the NOS ones so much longer. A Google search shows those bolts part# 340734 are for ann 85-87 C10. Did I buy the wrong NOS bolts?

I bought the same nos bolts. I am planning on cutting them down. The correct bolt would be ones like the one you removed from your truck. Both the nos and the original have a stainless cap on the head of the bolt. I would just go ahead and use the nos bolts.

Your NOS #340734 is a service replacement part! It replaces a lot of earlier parts in the system with a one size works for most approach. Like I've tried to tell people so often a dealer or claimed NOS part rarely is a direct duplicate of a period production part.

Run the P/N through http://gmpartswiki.com using the "search" function and "all". Then you can see applications and supercessions with that number.

The bolt on the right with the shallower head is correct for your 72 chrome bumper.

SS Tim, I disagree a little to the extent that what we -mean- when we say NOS is a part produced during the original production run. There are, as we see, a ton of service parts that often do the job but aren't correct for an original. So I'm only really picking a nit about the name.

Those would still be literally New Old Stock, but not what we usually want.

When searching on eBay, if it's got a bar code, I ignore it. I'm fairly certain GM didn't bar code in 1970. So definitely follow the gmpartswiki advice Tim gives. What I'm not certain is if a service part could ever carry the same part number as the production part, yet differ.

I want to use the ones on the right that are solid and have been chromed with the bumpers and guess I will.

For some reason I remember JohnH telling me something about these bolts that surprised me. It couldn't have been that they're chrome. Either he said flash chrome or, more likely, stainless.

Anyone know what the originals were?

The white bolts in the pic have the cap on them as do the "NOS" bolts. The ones the chromer gave me and chromed with the bumpers are one piece.

I disagree, I have 7 of these trucks at the moment. Everyone of them has the bolt with the more hemispherical head, except for one that is and older restoration.

My 69 came with stainless capped "high dome" (as called in some of the catalogs) carriage bolts as shown in post 9. However, all the high dome bolts I've seen in the catalogs have been chrome plated.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I could very well be wrong, I had my fresh restoration at the Brothers show a few years ago and was told by several folks, including the shows sponsor that the lower head bolt was correct for my 72 so I changed them out. I'll have to do some research and figure out which ones are correct.

I'm only bumping this thread because perhaps I can add some information on the subject, or even confusion. Better that then start a new thread perhaps.

I found these on my front bumper, I'd say they're original, we go way back. Two of six heads are different. They're all stainless. If original, then the factory had two types to choose from or it was intentional. That's not to say there aren't variances, and mine could be wrong as post 9 might imply.

Also for what worth, an image of the rear's as well. Those are stamped "P".
