Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

My '70 Sierra Grande Custom Camper is being featured in Hemmings, and I want to get the details right. If I knew them at the time, I've forgotten!

Are all Custom Campers the extended bed?
All all GMC extended beds Custom Campers?
Why does the glovebox only say Custom on a '70 Custom Camper?

I know what a Longhorn is, but for some reason I remember the usage of Custom Camper was more complicated!

Thanks!
Dave

Re: Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

If by "extended bed" you mean 133" wheelbase--- no, Z81 Custom Camper does not require that.

Z81 is a nameplate-only option that is "no cost" and gives you a slick door emblem, if you have the minimum equipment required for "camper service". It has nothing to do with the Z62 Custom trim package.

Z81 requires 8-ply tires or above and:
F59 Front Sway Bar
w/ std coil suspension: G68 HD rear shocks, G50 rear coils and/or G60 aux springs
w/ G70 leafs: F52 HD front shocks, G50 rear leafs

Thanks! So what's the correct name for a 133" GMC that does not have Z81?

Re: Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

I think there has been some discussion on what GMC called 133" trucks (since it's not Longhorn) and I believe the consensus is... GMC didn't have a special name for them, just went by the wheelbase. Pretty sure I haven't seen anything in the various literature I have.

Were "longhorns" even called out on the SPID? I mean is there even a way to verify if your truck could have been a longhorn or not, other than wheelbase?

Re: Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

Your other question about the glove box emblem -- in 1970 I think the trim levels are Deluxe (base), Custom (Z62), and Super Custom (Z84). As to why there isn't a special "super custom" emblem is anyone's guess, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't a special designator for that trim level.

Also, you have a "sierra grande", which in 1970 isn't a trim level (yet), but is another name plate option that you get if you also order the required options. Somebody in 1970 checked nearly all the boxes -- must have had a good salesman.

The model number (first line of SPID) denotes if its a shortbed, longbed or longhorn.

My guess is that they didn't want to create another unique glovebox emblem.

Re: Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

Great looking GMC! Custom Camper was basically a beefed up suspension package (both Chevy and GMC)regardless of trim levels and separate options. The key is to be year specific when discussing trim levels. Special k put together a great thread on GMC trim levels.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...mc+trim+levels

Re: Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

Dave this came to mind to me when this thread was posted.

Link: https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...ht=trim+levels

And really triggered it when someone asked about Chrome West coast mirrors.
I searched for Chrome West coast Mirrors.
You have the only set I found in the Search.

Who ever chromed your mirrors done a great job.

Custom Camper Should have been a Trim Level.

Cool Re: Can someone summarize the "Custom Camper" option for me?

Also, an interesting fact is that you could get Custom Camper equipment on the half ton trucks until 1970 I believe. The Custom Camper/10 emblem is a very very hard to find piece

1 No, 2 No, 3 Glove box emblems, or lack of glove box emblems, indicate trim level only. All extended bed pickups 133" came with leaf springs standard.
