All his life, my Grandpa Gipe was a member of a church that did not allow him to have a television or a radio. As a result, he had the dealership remove the radio from his new truck in 1970 when he purchased it. Against all odds, the man who owned it for the 26-year span between Grandpa and I kept BOTH the original invoice AND the blanking plate with digital clock he installed in place of the radio.
I had a few minutes this evening, and decided it should be put back to its original state - just as I remember it. So I pulled the radio and installed the clock. I can't believe it still works 50 years later. 🙂

It's made by ARA. He was an auto mechanic in the same building (eventually bought the shop and house that went with it) for 60 years, and installed it in the early 80s at some point if I'm not mistaken.

I worked with a Mennonite who appraised utilities and such. He's a super nice guy. He owns a 1970

LWB, since new, it's pretty clean, light olive. He once came over to see my restoration in its early progress, and offered to help all the way through.

He often dressed up as Abraham Lincoln, same coloring, beard and body. No TV. He reads a lot, and chases women. Amelia Earhart was his great aunt or something like.

Yep. Very similar to the super-strict group of Mennonites. Lots of rules, and they did indeed all look like Abraham Lincoln. Grandpa was clean shaven, so he never really fit in. I grew up that way also, and was in it until 2008. Glad that chapter is behind me...

I put conditions into my trust, and declared my truck a family heirloom. I think the subject took up 1/3rd of the document

In a nutshell, one of my kids gets it, listed in order of dibs. The other two receive 18% of its value, each. Value being the tricky part, because if you can't sell it to someone that shouldn't have it, well that makes the vehicle worth a bit less. I figured 90-100K is perhaps a good spot to be in, right now............To much?

The new owner gets a bunch of spare parts too.

I figured in the hassle of having to garage and insure it. That and I asked that nobody drives it (kidding).

I didn’t realize digital clocks were around in 1970. Amazing it has lasted 50-plus years and still works. I presume it is hardwired?

I was curious about that myself so I did some reading on it. Looks like they became attainable to the consumer market around 1970. I think he installed it in the early 70s sometime. He was the type that bought new technology as soon as it came out, particularly something novel like this. It is hardwired - 3 wires - ground, constant, and switched. The switched wire activates the display when you turn the key. Kinda cool.

My first car was a '64 Plymouth Valiant, in '75. My first thing added was 8- track then fm convertor which I still had and gave to someone on the board that wanted one, and of course a digital clock like that. Think they under$10 or so.

I see a CB Mic clip on the dash, so apparently the Church wasn't down on Radio as a technology, but Commercial Radio that played all the sinful Rock 'N' Roll.

Haha! Right. He took a fair bit of flack for that also, but there was technically not a rule against it, so they had to be okay with it... I wish I had his CB, but he pulled it out when he quit hauling water.
