Best Steering Gearbox
I need to replace the power steering gearbox in my 4WD 72 K/5 Blazer. I've read good things about Redhead on the forum, but most of the posts are older. Are they still the best? I can get a new Lares gearbox from Rock Auto for less, but I don't know anything about the brand.
Your input is appreciated.

Re: Best Steering Gearbox
Just putting this out there, the one you already have may be the best. Is the only reason you are replacing it because it leaks? Or do you have more substantial problems?

No leaks. The gear is worn out. It's adjusted as much as I feel is safe and still wanders.

Re: Best Steering Gearbox
I used a Redhead gear a couple years ago. It is a manual gear for my 63, but the quality of the rebuild seems to be really good. I did have to warranty the first one because of a minor leak that developed within the warranty period, but the warranty one I got hasn't had any issues since. If the gear on my 81 needs a refresh, I'll be getting a Redhead for that too

Re: Best Steering Gearbox
I've had a Redhead in my '71 for a couple years now. Power steering, works great. No problems what so ever and the customer service was great as well.

Re: Best Steering Gearbox
Redhead is pretty well known. Other brands are often not very reputable.

Re: Best Steering Gearbox
My Redhead steering gear will arrive Saturday. What convinced me (other than your input, which I truly appreciate) was the remanufacturing process. I believe their remanufactured gearbox is probably more precise than the new Lares units, which are supposed to be built to original factory specifications.
Thanks for all your input. I'll come back and tell you what my experience is once I get it installed.

Re: Best Steering Gearbox
I'll be the Red Headed step child here.. I put a Borgeson Box in my truck and am very happy with it so far. I have heard great things about the RedHead boxes but being in Canada cost comes into play. https://www.borgeson.com/Power-Steering-Boxes/
