Power steering pump

I have a serpentine system from a 90 chevy on my 71. The PS pump is shot and needs to be replaced. Can I use any pump and just switch pulleys?

Thanks
Jason

Did your pressure hose from the pump to box fit ok? I have a 91 set-up and the pump is a metric threaded pressure hose. Box is standard thread. I have a custom made hose metric one side standard the other. Also pump is tapered, on a 72 c20, and straight on a 91. Serpentine pulleys won't fit early pumps....Of course I am no expert. Anyone else know fer sure?

Jasonrog, just ask for the later model pump from your parts guy. Tell him it's a 90 model truck.

chickenwing- Screw that big 1 inch fitting out of the back of your metric pump and screw a normal flare type one in. Be careful that you don't leave the spring out.

Problem solved.

Thanks for the replys, However I am cheap and am going to my local wrecking yard on Friday. So a serpentine pulley WILL NOT fit on a older v belt pully pump?

Thanks

I don't know If a v belt and serp belt pump will interchange. i always just buy the right pump. You can get one off of a truck, van, suburban, or even any 4.3 V6 vehicle. The 4.3 uses the same front setup as the V8 does

Great tip, Tx, I can use this one. Since I'm doing the PS conversion from scratch, can you show me the "flare type" fitting you're talking about? And what models to check for one? Bound to be cheaper than a custom hose...

Thanks...SSOW

WOW! I never thought to try and change the fittings! I could have raped the one from my old pump I threw out! Well the hose is allready made. When it does go I will try your suggestion. Thanks!

Ok, serpentine setup retrieved, and it's time to do the new hose setup. I'm getting a new PS gearbox (for the '69 application), so I'll need to make the new (89' model) pump talk to the old gearbox.

The arrow below in the pic shows what must be the fitting that Tx_Firefighter recommends to swap for a flare fitting that will fit the hose end for the '69. What I'd like to do is just buy new PS hoses for the '69 application, and replace that flare fitting. Does anyone know the specs for that flare fitting, and where I can get one?

Also, it appears the other hose (low pressure return) will just attach to the pump with a hose clamp, so no mods needed there. Is that correct?

Thanks...SSOW

I understood from Tx Firefighter's post that you could re-use the fitting from the old pump. He said to make sure not to leave the spring out. Thought I would figure it out when the time comes. The 69 pressure hose might need a little massaging to fit between the pump and the block, it's tight in there. The low pressure line just clamps on.

Ah, there would be the problem...I don't have an old pump. That gunked-up one in the pic is the only one I've got - it's the one that was on the '89 I grabbed the serpentine setup from...SSOW

Oh. Go down to the junk-yard rape the fitting from a donor. Dunno if the 73 and up pumps would work but suspect they will.

I had a power steering pump off a '98 dodge Dakota with a serpentine pulley sitting around and started looking at is and it bolted right in. No changing fittings or anything. I had to change to a v-belt pulley since I didn't have a serpentine system. But it's still working.

Blue Beard,

If your question is for me, we're doing the conversion. '69 C10 has manual steering, we're going with a I6-V8 swap, and wanted the serpentine pulley system. Since virtually all serpentine setups (even aftermarket) have provisions for the P/S pump, we decided to go ahead and convert the truck.

I pulled all other engine accessories from the '89 C1500 when I got the serpentine brackets.

Were the 89 1500 brackets aluminum or steel? I got mine of a 91 2500 and they were aluminum. If it cracks want the steel ones.

They're steel - visible in the pic above, but filthy. Had to get the pulley off to even remove the pump from the bracket.

We had my Dad's cast brackets break clean off on a fishing trip once, a major inconvenience. So when I found the steel setup, I grabbed it. At least if it cracks, I can weld/brace it...
