Engine Start Up Stand - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Does anyone know what I need to made an engine start up stand. My truck will not be ready for the engine for sometime, but I am dying to hear was my engine will sound like. I know I need a stand, radiator, fuel tank, battery, what else?

I can't think of anything else you'd need... Maybe a tach so you can do the break in right away?

Oh, one thing -- A way to duct the exhaust outside so you don't kill yourself with CO poisioning...

do you think I need to have a volt reg or alt on it? I wonder if anyone has detailed plans on how to build on. That would really help out.

I would use some pipe or sq tubing sq tubing is nice but pipe is cheap..

You can do without an alternator If you were worried about it Just put a battery charger on the battery I doubt your going to run it for extended periods of time you can run a vehicle with a bad alternator a long ways as long as your not using headlights and stuff like that..

an old pair of headers is a nice idea and ducting the exhaust outside is a good idea as well.

Id make the frame wider than an engine and have a front and rear plate if you do it like that you can make differnt plates for different engines the rear plate would work for a sb or bb chevy and maybe BOP I think a few of the bolts line up on a BOP patter VS Chevy pattern.

If i ever figure out what is wrong with my camera/computer ill post some pics of an engine run stand.

How about gauges, and ign. switch.

Somewhere I have a set of plans for building a nice engine test stand. Built on several years back, worked great.

Made the mistake of selling her

certainly sounds like a great idea, I'd add to putting some wheels on it to make it mobile. I wish I had one for this motor when I was first getting it running with all the oil leaks, and intake vacuum leaks.

WOW!!! that is one awesome engine start stand that guy built, I wish I has the supplies to build one like that. but of course then I would some more project engines, and trucks, maybe some nice old cars.... Yeah I need one bad!! :-)
