Engine want run

I have a 1982 1/2 ton pickup with a 350 engine, I just replace the carburator taking off a Holly, replacing it with a Carter. My problem is the only way I can get the engine started is to prime the carburator. I've changed the fuel filter, I've checked to make sure the fuel was pumping up to the carburator & it is, but it want stay running. What am I doing wrong?

Umm, dumb question, but is your fuel filter in the right way? If you've got it in backwards, then it won't get any fuel...
