1967-68 dog dish hub cap repair?
I purchased some 67-68 dog dish hub caps recently and they are painted. I dont think they are stainless due to them being painted? Are these hubcaps just made of regular steel?
Two of the hub caps have some small dents that I would like to try and remove. I cannot find a good thread about the repair of hubcaps so if anybody has some tips on how to do it then it is appreciated. Is there somebody who actually does this type of work professionally that you guys send them to? |

I believe they would be pot metal. Dents can be hammered out. Splits, that’s another story…
Hows that sweet 68 looking?

Have you put a Magnet to them?

Re: 1967-68 dog dish hub cap repair?
I am collecting parts for when I take it back to factory looking. I dont see any splits but if there are I will not be able to weld them up since they are made of pot metal? I am going to get the bench seat cover made by SMS here in a few months as it had red interior and the red bench seat cover has a cool inner pattern from the factory.

No I have not. I will do that tomorrow. But if they are pot metal then I suppose the magnet will not stick and I probably cannot use my mig welder to weld bad spots if any.

If they are painted from the factory they should be just steel. If they were shiny from the factory they would be chrome over brass

If factory painted they are steel fairly easy to fix . The best type of hammer would be a chisel head hammer . I have had a Snap on version for over 40 years it’s my go to hammer for bodywork too. There are a lot of videos on YouTube just look up Hammer and dolly dent repair

Yep I took a magnet to them and it stuck so they are just plain steel. So if and when I remove the paint and come across a crack or pinhole or stress crack I am thinking that I should just be able to mig weld them up and then grind down the weld?

Agree, you can just weld them up. As for dent's I have had great luck with a body hammer and dolly, it's amazing how nice you can make them look with some patient hammering. They are not pot metal...

Re: 1967-68 dog dish hub cap repair?
I restored the caps for my 1968 GMC. I stripped the old paint and wire wheeled to clean them up. Any dents were filled and sanded and then primed. The argent silver was sprayed on first. Once that cured I masked them off and sprayed the black. The GMC letters are vinyl. I drew the letters then took it to a local printer and had them cut the letters for a few bucks.
