Ignition switch help, please. - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I lost my key to the project truck I am working on. A local locksmith said
that he can make a key for me if I bring in the the ignition switch. Herein
lies the problem that I am having. I have unscrewed the bezel on the switch
but I can't get it to come all the way off. It just continues to turn but won't
release from the switch. I feel so stupid asking this but how do I remove the ignition switch? I don't want to damage the switch, bezel, etc. by prying on it. Any help with this problem would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Don,

I'm almost 100% certain you need the key to get the ign switch out without ruining it. Hopefully I'm wrong, and someone can give you some better advice.

Bad news...you need the key to remove the cylinder

Okay I would need the key to get the cylinder out. But does this also keep me from getting the bezel off?. Does the cylinder have a flange that holds the bezel in place even after it is unscrewed from the switch and the cylinder has to be released before the bezel comes off? Looks to me that if I could get the bezel off then the entire unit would slip out of the dash to the rear after unplugging the switch wiring. Do I just try and cut the bezel free from the switch and pull it out? Thanks again for any help.

Take them a door lock if its original they are the same

I just got off the phone with a guy that lives a few miles from me and he told me that he has between 150 and 200 chevy keys that he keeps on a hanger in his gargage. A lot of those keys are from the late 60's and early 70's. He's going to stop over one night this week with them. Several of his relation have junk yards in the area and he said that he just always got the keys out of chevy trucks that they had parted out or had crushed. I am certainly glad to hear that he collects old chevy keys. LOL. He stated as you have that lots of times a key from that era will work on another ignition in order to turn the switch to access. and then he uses a paper clip to release the cylinder. I can then have a correct key made to fit my switch. Thanks for the help.
