Mirror Backing Plates - Attached?

We pulled one of the factory rearview mirrors off the '69 today, and THUNK, the backing plate falls to the bottom of the door.

Before I do the other side, should I expect that one to fall also, or were they spot-welded in place and this one just came loose?

That could be kinda sticky if you didn't want to take the door panels off. Guess if you knew it would fall, you could try to hold them with some lengths of all-thread that the mirror would slip over. Other ideas?

Thanks...SSOW

On my 68 they were not attached to the door in any way. All-thread would be a great idea, wish I would have thought of that!! Not sure if the '69 trucks have two or three mounting screws, my 68 had 3, so I took two of them out (leaving the 3rd one tight), twisted the mount down out of the way, then put those two screws back in the backing plate before removing the last screw. Hope this is useful, and not too confusing. Good luck!!!
