spring around brake drum

this is not that important to me but what the hell is that round spring on the brake drum for.seems like they either rust away or never go back on.just wondering,have nothing to do this rainy morning.

It keeps the drum from resonating during braking. In other words it keeps it from hummmmmmming while braking.

If this is a long spring around the outside of the brake drum it may be to help with heat dissipation. It is certainly a trick used by people racing drum braked classics here in the UK. The spring draws heat from the drum and because of its shpae and the airflow through it loses heat quicker than the big chunk of iron it's wrapped around. It is a crude version of the finned drums you find on machines like old Alfa's and such.

This was the very first question I posted on here over a year ago.
Mine has the 2 front ones taken off (I STILL have not installed them) and it does in fact mak a rather annoying ringing sound that I can hear over my [pipes. And the pipes are not very quiet either.
