Adding a rear sway bar would help too, but that's really a job for a 1T truck, since the tank's over a ton when full.

What’s the GVWR in the plate? My 72 c20 is 7500 lbs the truck itself is less than 5k . So over 2500lbs capacity that’s the approx weight of 300 gallons of water . I would go from there .
Lots of limitations on old trucks . Age of the springs and axles is one as is the braking system. Drums would have a lower ability to stop a fully loaded truck . But modern E rated tires are better than old bias plies so that’s a plus . Also 4x4 trucks usually have less payload and GCVWR because they are usually heavier than their 2 wheel drive counterparts.
