68-72 rear end issue

Classic Parts of America has conversion axles that would probably solve the problem.

So 40 thou is thinner than a dime, is that what we're talking about here?

Thank You for clarifying my mistake that I made.
The axle play is .040 thou not .40
It seems like that would be to much movement on those c clips. Ultimately you would have your rear end axles able to move .080 thou on you

So you know their is no way to re-drill a 6 lug for a 5 unless you weld up one hole on the axle flange.

I realize that most shops that redrill axle bolt patterns will cover that prior to drilling

Food for thought, you could go with c-clip eliminators

The 72’s are longer than the 68’s as well. The over all width of the housings changed in or around ‘70.
