Fixed Something That's Always Bothered Me 67-72 C10
Hello, I finally got around to fixing something that's always bothered me when I drive my truck. It's the small details that make the difference and make these trucks more enjoyable to drive!
The stock gas pedal is recessed 3+ inches down from the brake pedal, causing my shoes to get stuck behind the brake pedal and just generally annoying me when I take it out, especially when off 4 Wheeling over technical terrain. Solution, get a used chevy pedal off the flea-bay and use the TIG welder to put the pedal in the position it should have been from the factory. I considered a Lokar pedal but it didn't have the range to put the pedal in the best possible location. My TIG welder, some 3/8 steel rod and time allowed my to place it literally anywhere. I think the stock pedal may not have been opening the secondaries all the way as well, confirmed they do now. See pictures below! Last edited by beanious; 07-28-2024 at 11:37 AM. |

That pedal design was utilized from 1971-72. The 1967-70 design was awful on a couple of fronts. The pedal would wear, and then would not be retained by the ball studs on the floor. Also, if the engine mount would break, the engine would rise and jamb the throttle wide open.
I switched to the 1971-72 suspended pedal/cable throttle on my 1970 Blazer for the reasons mentioned above. Great job on the mod!

One could also lower the brake pedal. I suspect that the only reason that the brake pedal is so high up is so that it matches (pretty much) the clutch pedal height. There's no other real reason I can think of for it.
beanious- did you verify that the pedal is at the floor when the carb is at WOT? I've seen carbs with the stop bent and the primary throttle plates could actually go over-center in that case.

It's an automatic, I'm happy with the brake pedal height, perfectly adjusted for at rest and throw. After installed I checked the full throttle to make sure I can't push the carb linkages past full open and bend rods etc. Perfect throttle idle height and perfect full throttle throw with the pedal on the floor. |

Unless you have a size 16 boot, I don't see how you could operate that accelerator pedal in rough terrain. People generally rest their heel on the floor for stability, as the gas pedal is relatively easy to operate at any position between top and bottom. Is your brake pedal is in the correct position with the rubber stop, at the top of the pedal arm? With that raised gas pedal, it would be EXTREMELY uncomfortable for me. With my manual trans,I would really hate getting my foot off the brake pedal on a hill and getting to the gas. Imported cars from counties where people have little feet often have all three pedals lined up at the same height. My C4 had pedals at different heights, with the clutch higher, but they were very close together. You couldn't drive it with work boots. IMO

It all comes down to personal preference really. Not everyone wants to keep their vehicle stock, I take my truck across the Rubicon Trail, something most people don't do. The ability to easily transition from brake to gas and also gas to brake seamlessly is what I desired and accomplished. On to the next modification

Might I make a suggestion. If you're not running shoulder belts, fill those holes! Very bright push in led's for some mood lighting.

I’m 5’11” and I feel the gas pedal is to close to me at times specially after I have been driving the 85 for a while. But I guess it’s all subjective to what you like and feel comfortable with.

That's something I've thought about doing because I'm tall and the pedal is too high. But it's definitely a PITA with the pushrod nestled in the bracket. However, I had to mess with it when I converted to power brakes 30 years ago, but I was much younger!

Looking at your before pictures the gas peddle looks extremely low in relation to the brake peddle . Mine isn’t like that at all it’s a little lower but not like yours . I’ll snap a picture before I leave for Carlisle this morning
