Texas AG Sues GM for Illegally Selling Drivers’ Private Data

Good on Texas:

"Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued General Motors for its false, deceptive, and misleading business practices related to its unlawful collection and sale of over 1.5 million Texans’ private driving data to insurance companies without their knowledge or consent."

Re: Texas AG Sues GM for Illegally Selling Drivers’ Private Data

There was a bunch of talk about this stuff on the late model Camaro forum I’m on. GM selling peoples driving habits from their pony cars to insurance companies. Several people had said that they drive their cars in a very spirited manner on the streets but never had gotten any accidents or tickets but had their rates jump for no explained reason. I hope GM looses their asses on this one. Luckily my Camaro is old enough now that the onstar is no longer supported by GM. Dont need Hagerty seeing any of my shenanigans lol.

Took my truck out for some exercise yesterday. Made some "hard acceleration" runs, getting into traffic. No tracking involved.

Re: Texas AG Sues GM for Illegally Selling Drivers’ Private Data

I saw an article on this yesterday. It was by a lady who works in the cybersecurity field. She bought a new Toyota and turned off all the tracking... or so she thought. When she used an app to scan the data that was being transmitted, she was shocked. It wasn't just location and speed; it included things like her email address, the places she visited, and even her credit card numbers.

I have zero interest in owning a new car.

Here's a section from Toyota's Connected Services Privacy Notice (document HERE)

"Face Identification. Certain vehicles equipped with an interior, driver-facing camera use sensor and/or image data from the vehicle's interior to scan your face when you open the vehicle's door. If you opt-in and link your user profile using the in-vehicle “Setup Face” process, the Face Identification feature may use your Facial Geometric Features and Profile Data to verify your identity and load your saved user profile on the vehicle. Your Facial Geometric Features will only be stored on your vehicle and are not transmitted to Toyota."

Re: Texas AG Sues GM for Illegally Selling Drivers’ Private Data

Last week I read that Ford has already developed a deal to report your vehicles law breakage directly to authorities.
This week I read automakers are about to seriously reduce top speeds in new cars, once again. You all remember the factory set speed limiters gm vehicles had back around 1990s? I know the police agencies will appreciate that. I hate that it has come to that but it is for the best overall, in the name of public safety.
And anyone who carries a cell phone or such device in their car can be traced thereby tracking your car, GPS will getcha.

Re: Texas AG Sues GM for Illegally Selling Drivers’ Private Data

I don’t know how restrictive the 90’s stuff really was though, my 98 silverado tops out right around 100. That’s still plenty fast for the streets, granted there are interstates in the west with 80+ mph speed limits where if you aren’t doing close to 100 you will get run over. I-15 between St. George and Vegas is a really good example of this.

My Camaro supposedly will do about 155 in stock form on certain roads in Mexico… and honestly I think that should be the case as plenty of the vettes, Camaros, mustangs, challengers, etc have been used in track environments in stock form where getting speed cut out defeats the whole purpose of having the car.

That said I honestly believe in many cases there’s way too much horsepower on the roads today for most people’s driving abilities. Everything seems to have a minimum of 300-350 HP. That blows the hey days of the 60’s away big time. Technology is cool and the way power trains have evolved in the last 20 years is amazing no doubt about it. Who would have ever thought we’d have a production 1000hp corvette or diesel trucks that are as capable as they are. I don’t really see where mini vans, small cars, and crossovers just to name a few need to go 0-60 in 6 seconds.
