If we think about the 73-91 record of the squares we may want to think they were pretty safe. Similarly, gas tanks were in the cab for about 50 years until 72. Hmm.

I've seen VWs that burned when the fuel hose on the fuel pump cracked due to heat from the exhaust manifold and leaked. It would flow from the gas tank and keep the fire going. I always checked that hose when I did any kind of service on a VW. Still, not that common a problem.
