Horn problems
I cant seem to get the horn on my sons 71 to work correctly. My 72 Blazer has a tilt column and a aftermarket wheel so I cant compare. Problem is that I have current to the spring loaded pin that passes through the stock wheel all the time. I am assuming that the truck has the stock automatic column. but there is about a 1/4 to 3/8 gap between the wheel and the turn signal housing when the wheel is bolted down. Its probably not the relay because I can hear it activate when you short the pin to a ground with a tester. Also does a 71 have a spring under the wheel. My 72 has a spring under the wheel between the top bearing and the plastic turn signal contact plate. Finally isnt the order of assembly of the parts under the horn button, first spring plate then button retainer cup then plastic mounting ring with the bosses down so that the screws dont ground out. Then the horn button. I f some one can post pics of the assembly I would appreciate it.

I don't have a picture of the horn switch setup, but your description is correct. The 71 should have a spring between the plastic piece and the steering wheel.
Have you tried grounding the horn brush and does that make the relay "click"? Dirt and corrosion at the switch's points of contact will prevent the horn switch from grounding the horn brush so make sure that it is clean. Jim |

Maybe the column has been changed out. Is there any difference between the years of columns. I tried a 67/68 wheel on it and it seemed to fit better with the turn signal housing. I probably wasnt very clear. The problem is that I cant get the horn to shut off. There is no break in the circuit when everything is installed. Wondering if all of the parts are from the correct year. I do know for sure that the horn contact plate on this column is different then the one on my 72.

Here is a picture of the horn switch setup. The horn button is not shown, but it aligns with the groove on the horn button retainer.
Left to right under the wheel is the cancelling cam which has the horn brush in it. The horn brush sticks through the steering wheel and contacts the concave washer. The concave washer, (concavity down), is held in place with the nylon insulator which holds the horn button retainer in place. Hopefully the pic is helpful. Jim |
