Are rocker boxes on 1975 K5s bolted in or welded in place?
I am wondering if they are removable to fit front seats and ensure that there are plates or washers under the floor?

Every now and then you'll see someone with all the parts for a full convertible swap including the rocker boxes and there are a lot of write ups on how to do the conversion so I can't imagine it's too bad a job. But I've never owned a full vert K5 nor wanted to convert one of mine so I don't know how they come off. What do you see when you're under the truck?

Re: Are rocker boxes on 1975 K5s bolted in or welded in place?
Truck is at home and i'm at work and I won't get home til it's dark so I can't see under it i trying to figure out how front seats are fastened in really because I'm taking mine out this weekend, and if I do that, and then find out I can't put seats back without taking rocker boxes off and i can't do that.....well then I'm in a bit of a pickle.

The nuts are fixed to the bottom of the tub so you're OK there, just run the bolts out and grab your seats.

The rocker boxes welded in. Taken about nine '73-75 apart to bare bones.
Welded from fire wall to rear floor, along the outer rocker and along the floor next to the trans tunnel. The seat mounts are welded to bottom of the floor pan. Here is a pic I found on online. The one closest is the driver's side. See spot welds. |

Thanks for the pic. I'd read that they went from behind the firewall to behind the front seat, but it still didn't click with me how big they are. So can you remove them w/air hammer and chisel?

Re: Are rocker boxes on 1975 K5s bolted in or welded in place?
They start at the lower seam on the firewall where floor pan is welded to firewall and go all the way to where rear floor meets the cab pan. You see how they rise up in the picture to meet rear floor.
You can use air hammer but makes a mess. Drilling out spots is better and you can reinstall them if they aren't rotten. Only down side it takes longer. It's a big job taking them out. Of those 9 I parted out, only one had a rotten floor and rest were solid. Personally, it wasn't worth the trouble to pull them out for $75 they bring. 3hr job to remove them so they can be re-used. Rust belt guys would cry if they saw what I sent to scrapper over the yrs. Rust free floors and beds. |

Anyone know if these are available aftermarket? Or, anyone got a picture of the underside of the tub with them in place?

As far as I know, they are not reproduced by anyone. I don't have any pics but they basically look like a flat panel covering 95% of the underside of the floor.
