Engine Q's....

Anyone on this board have a newer vortec 350 engine in their trucks? What type of mods etc. does it take to mount it in there etc, etc.? I'm pretty sure it has been done just wanna know anything I can about it. Pro's/Con's and the like...oh, any pics ya got of the setup too.

This is not to say I'm doing it but what are advantages to FI or a Carb on this setup?

IMO...Fuel injection will cost quite a bit more, and be way more of a PITA...running wires, computer, all the stupid sensors, modifying the fuel tank with a fuel pump and return line...however, in doing this, you can run the 4L80E tranny which is the best OD automatic hands down, you'll get better MPG, low end torqu, easy start ups...esp in cold weather, and it'll hold it's tune up longer.
A carb set up would be WAY cheaper, easier to do, (get special intake, and run a small inline fuel pump...that's about it) easy to troubleshoot and much cheaper to repair. (look at the price of the stupid new plastic dist that is needed for the FI set up) But a carb set up would not have all the plusses listed above, but it is way easier to tune, and is much more forgiving when it is not set 100% right.


I prefer the carbs just becouse it is cheap, easy to package, troubleshooting, and to tune.

The guys who love the injection will be posting here shortly to make me look like a hick. (said in jest)

IMO you couldn't pay me or even force me with a gun to my head to use the new ('95^) vortech injection! I work on these all day long & see way too many problems. my advice if you want injection go with throttle body. there is a manifold available for the newer heads. peripheral parts are a dime a dozen at salvage yards & they can be diagnosed with a simple voltmeter. not to mention how easy they are to set up in trucks like ours. TPI is nice but a pain to setup. just ask 71swb4x4.

reasons to go with FI
remote start
self tuning for weather
too much money in the bank
you want more wires to work with
you want a check engine light
you have too much hair & want to pull some out

do you see where this is going? any one else have any ideas?

So is a crate 350 better than using a vortec 350 with modified intake etc.?

The vortec 350 is fine...but only with a carb.
And you can hook up a remote starter to a carb'd vehicle...I'm working out the details with a kit I was given last year. And a carb shouldn't need tunes for the weaher...although altitude is one thing that makes carbs suck...go through Denver without popping your hood on a carb'd engine.
My solution to that last one is simply...don't go to Denver.

Depending on the year of Vortec, you may have to use an electric fuel pump with a carb setup due to the fuel pump pushrod hole not being drilled in the current blocks.
