Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Almond Harvest is all but over, some Walnuts still going on, 2 months of harvest dust everywhere.
We had our first rain overnight and everything got a good soaking so I rolled the 40 out and gave her a bath. Spent about 2 hours inside and out.

Drove her to the local (best burger in the valley) mom and pop smash burger joint. Failed to get a pic when the sun was shining so I took this instead after I got home.

Squeaky Clean Again!

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Nice '40 Ford! I had a '40 Chevy in that general body shape- a businessman's coupe. 350/400/3.90 diff with a front straight axle. Light blue with a dark blue Belgian velvet interior. Sold it to pay for my wife's engagement ring. It turned mid-14's in the 1/4, which was pretty scary, because it tended to float at high speed.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Thanks for all the compliments.
I fellow I ran around with in high school had a Forty Two Door Sedan 327 Cross Ram, 30-30 Duntov, M-21 4-Speed, GM 12 bolt 410 posi. It was nothing super lightning fast.. but boy did it sound good.

I always loved his 40 and a 40 Coupe was my fav, so a little later in life I built us one. The rear has a Chassis Engineering Parallel leaf spring kit, I'm still buggy sprung in the front, split wishbone with a Henry axle heated and dropped 4" with 70 Mustang disc brakes adapted.

It's a nice cruiser with heat and A/C that drives very nice too.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

that parallel leaf swap makes a world of difference. I have a 33 Ford pickup that my grandfather and I did that swap on. Night and day. He kicks himself for not doing that sooner with how much it improved the ride. Truck original had a set of split bones and a true hammer dropped axle that was then also drilled, but something was slightly off so, replaced the axle with a new forged unit and went to hair pins and a vega box with cross steering.

Are you still running the stock steering or a F1 style box and drag link or did you swap to cross steer. That change was the biggest improvement up front.

Yes.. the parallel springs are a very nice ride, I was told by Chassis Engineering that they use Dodge D50 springs and they actually have a slight about 1" reverse arc to them. I had called Chassis Engineering about the situation back then and they explained to me that this is correct and they provide a much better ride.

Yes.. I'm set up with a cross steer connected to a frame mounted 67 Mustang steering box controlled by a shortened by me... 1970 C10 Automatic Steering Column

I like the '37 - '40 Chevy coupes. Those were good years for them.

The 32 Fords are the favorite for many auto enthusiasts but I'll tell you what, I fell in love with a 32 Chevrolet sedan many years ago. The prettiest 30s Chevy I've ever seen. I've been told early Chevys had more wood in them than fords so their bodies did not hold up as well out in the weather.

My wife's Godfather had a 30's model Chevy.
While he was living he had someone redo the wood in it.
I have got a picture somewhere if I can find it.

The Art Deco era of both auto's and buildings was a good time in design evolution. All this latest fad of everything square with black and grey as the primary colors is soooo boring...
This is the rest of that picture, if anyone noticed the hitch and safety chains on the back of the '38. 2013 Retro, "canned ham" style camping trailer. We've traveled to Des Moines for Goodguys, Springfield MO for an NSRA show and Pigeon Forge, TN for the Shades of the Past show. I built the hitch and wired the car with the 7 way RV power cord.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I had my 69 Mach1 on the lift the other day doing the annual grease and general maintenance checks and saw I had a rear axle seal leaking. So I rented all the tools necessary from NAPA/Oreilly's Auto, bought a new seal and flange gaskets and within an hour and a half had it all changed out and back on all 4's

Today the Grandson and I tore/dismantled the engine run stand to bare-bones as to get it to the powder coater. It was a good morning spent together, plus he likes the car/truck culture and helping his Papa work on them.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Went to an auction Saturday at an old Chevrolet/Olds dealer in Scottsburg IN that had been closed for quite some time. There were tons of NOS parts from the 50s - 80's, as well as equipment, tools, etc. They were selling the NOS parts in huge bundles of hundreds or thousands at a time for dirt cheap.

Not too many truck parts, but I did come home with a cool 72 truck first aid kit as well as a 68 truck data book and a 71 truck data book.

I thought of you because they had a machine shop and were selling the lathes, etc. But these would have needed a crane to move them. Big stuff.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Last year I bought a small enclosed trailer to haul my Harley south with me in the winter. It is a 3,000# GVW, so no brakes on it. I pulled it with my 2011 Silverado and 90% of the time, I hardly noticed it was back there for normal braking. There are always those idiots on the road that create dangerous issues and I could feel it trying to push me with hard braking. This year, I'm pulling it with my recently purchased 2015 Toyota Highlander and decided I wanted brakes for that. I bought a complete change over kit marketed by Dexter just for adding brakes. It is a compete kit, down to the nuts to bolt the backing plates on the axle. Fortunately, the trailer has a #3,500 axle, so it had the flange to bolt the plates on already. Swapping the hubs over and mounting the brakes took about an hour. The wiring took 3 days, but I'm slow and had to chase for conduit and the plug for the vehicle end of the cord.
I ran the new 7 way cord inside the front wall,as the 4 way was and and added this junction box to keep the wires neat. Connected the existing stop/brake and tail/marker wires and then added the brake circuit back down and out, under the floor. The cross members already had holes in them to run wires back, but I cut and bent 1/2" conduit and tacked it to the members for the wire to run thru. Another piece across to the right side and connect the wires.
