Windsheild Working itself out.

I have a issue with my new windsheild well 3yr old windsheild. I bought a new windsheild and Precision windsheild seal. Installed it as I have windsheilds for years. Never had one slowly working itself back out of the frame. The seal has actually along the bottom of the glass between the wipers slowly worked it self over the frame pinch weld and the glass is starting to come out of the seal. I am like what the hell. I am ordering a new seal as I dont trust this one but I am wondering if anyone has ever experienced this before and if yes what did you do to stop it from happening again. Also I am thinkin is the new glass arched wrong? I am contemplating on putting 3M windo weld in the frame before installing the window with the new seal. Let me know what you all have experienced or think. Thanks

I sounds to me like the bottom lip of the seal is not seated into the lower pinch weld. I would try using a large cotter key removal tool that has a hook on the end and see if you can pull the inside lip back over the pinch weld. The cotter key removal tool I use is about a foot long.

It was over the pinch weld it has moved too far out of the frame to just pull the seal back now. Thanks for the idea though.

Did you use any sort of lubricant between the windshield frame of the truck and the gasket itself? Maybe that lubricant just hasn't dried yet and still kinda slippery.

Or the precision gaskets have what they refer to as a tertiary (3rd) lip that you have to pull over the lip in the channel. I know you mentioned you had checked.. Just making sure it's the same 'lip' to get pulled over. I guess I could see where that might make it slip back out.

Are you using the stainless trim in the gasket? Or without ?

Yes I used a windsheid install lube which I got from Precision Seal. The windshield has been installed for a few years now so I am sure the lube has dried by now. I dont know anything about 2 lips in the seal that need to be pulled over the pinch weld. I installed this one the same as all the others infact I used the same rope to draw the seal in place which I originally bought from Precision Seal as well. No I dont have the seal with the stainless trim. I appreciate all your thoughs and ideas. I will inspect the new Precision seal for additional lips to pull in to place. My new seal will be here this week.

First let me say if I came across like I was telling you, you did it wrong. That wasn't my intentions.. Just trying to help figure it out.

I am not a professional glass guy at all. I have done it maybe 3-4 times. I am a 20+ yr IT guy though, I research everything 10 times before I do it. I can't say I've done it a million times but just sharing what seemed to work for me. It sounds like you know a ton more than I do, for sure..

The lube you mentioned, is it petroleum based or water based? I found KY jelly works very well, it's water based too so it will evaporate after the install. Won't drip all over your dash, etc. The CVS cheapo brand works nicely.

Good luck with it. They're a PITA for sure.

In no way did I take your remarks in bad way. I had hoped saying "I appreciate your thoughts and ideas" would insure that was understood. I apologize if I sounded different. I did work as a diagnostic tech (mechanic) for over 30yrs and now am a 16yr + custom powder coater specializing in auto and motorcycle parts. So I do have a automotive knowledge but in no way makes me smarter than anyone else. One thing I learned through the years turning wrenches is you will never know everything. I am learning new stuff everyday. I too read and reasearch a lot as well. Even the stuff I already know how to do. Thats why I belong to this forum. Since I got my 69 C-10 I have read here and learned so much from all these knowledgeable and talented people here.

I used the Precision weatherstrip lube #153812 its silicone, petroleum, and solvent free so it will not dry out rubber seal. (stated on the bottle) Although I have never heard about a second lip, my seals have always sat smooth and flat like theirs did and as they pointed out it should. I will double check that this time for sure. I've installed a bunch of this type of windshield/windshield seals so I must have gotten lucky everytime but possibly this one. I use the Precicsion PRP-0001 rope insert tool and a Lisle 80420 hook tool for working the seal lip over the pinch weld. I generally start with the bottom of the windshield and working to the top as the instructions that come with the WBL-685 Precision Seal. I will add a link below to the WBL-685 seal page the instructions link is on that page. The link is for a pdf file to open which I cant post effectively here. I will this time start from the top and working to the bottom as the video says to and see if it installs easier/better and last longer. lol

My youngest brother was a glass man for many years. Just before I had the new cabover camper shell installed, I pulled the windshield and cleaned up some surface rust, and repainted the roof. I had to delete the antenna hole for the rubber ducky radio (CB). I was scared spitless when installing that windshield for fear of breakage, and it was a bit of a struggle, but we put it in completely dry. It was a new gasket from LMC, FWIW.

Last one I put in dry I broke. Thats why I use something for lube now.
