Thumbs up 1960 -1966 Deluxe steering wheel assembly

I have done a lot of forum thread searching and cannot find a specific thread on the assembly of the parts for the deluxe wheels, so since I'm on assembly of my 2nd wheel in a week and have been asked by a few members the assembly process, I figured I'd take some pics and document it. Its fairly simple, requires minimal tools. Some have screws, some use clutch head design screws. I've found the car and truck wheels parts to be interchangeable also. If you don't have a wheel and are looking.....1958-1960 chevy cars are good donars and also 1960-1966 chevy trucks with the deluxe options. Nova's and corvairs had the later style 1966 wheels too. If anypne can think of any other, please share.

I'll start with a picture of the parts that are needed in addition to the steering wheel itself, the horn ring and the horn center cap.

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

Ok, so 1st you start off with the bare steering wheel. 1st part up is the horn spring assembly. It goes into the wheel at the 1 o'clock position in the large hole. It will just press in, some slide right in, some are a little tight, but it won't take much to get the plunger assembly in.

2nd step is the round silver insulator retainer. It has 3 raised tabs that will face up.

3rd step is to install the insulator itself. Its the round plastic piece with 6 notches on it. The 3 square notches fit into the 3 raised tabs on the retainer that was installed in step 2.

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

Step 4 is the install of the horn trim ring. It just fits over the previous parts. You can see in the picture that the 2 horn cap nuts are held in place by small retainers. This makes mating the horn cap to the wheel much easier, especially if the wheel is still on the truck.

Step 5 is the plastic screw retainer with the 3 holes. The 3 screws will install here and the screws will go into the steering wheel.

Step 6 if installing the steering wheel on the truck is the washer and nut for the steering shaft.

Step 7 is the install of the horn cap which is held on by two screws that install from the back of the steering wheel.

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

This completes the deluxe steering wheel assembly. Disassembly is just the opposite. Start with removal of the horn cap from the access holes on the back of the steering wheel. Remove the steering shaft nut and washer. Disassemble the horn assembly and use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel. Follow steps 1-7 to reassemble.

This wheel isn't going on the truck for a couple of weeks, so the nut and washer have been left off.

I would recommend doing and repairs prior to reassembly. This wheel has some cracks that I will address at a later date, but I had some missing pieces and wanted to complete the wheels parts. There are several threads on the epoxy repairs of the wheels. Its not a hard process as I've done it before, just time consuming and a lot of hand sanding.

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

Thanks for the additional pics Dan. Pic 4 that you posted shoes the insulator in the retainer real good. A pic I thought I took but didn't or it didn't save. We have a lot of threads and builds with pieces of it here and there, but nothing solid on install and disassembly. I think between these pics and any others posted it should help. I need to do a good one on the turn signal switch assembly also. I have another one to do for the stepside.

Yes, the 1966 Chevy truck deluxe option used a 1966-1967 Chevy II (non SS) steering wheel (it was also used for the 1965, but mostly listed as 1966-67).

The previous years deluxe option used the 1960-61 Bel Air steering wheel (also used on 1959 El Camino).
It was also used on another model, but had a full horn ring instead of the half ring...the model escapes me right now. I hope that helps. -Vince

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

Found a good diagram in the factory maintenance book also. Shows the switch and intermediate column and a standard wheel assembly.

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

This is a great thread. I have a 66 that the PO put a 10 inch racing wheel in. I got one out of a 65 but did not know that the Corvair wheels were the same. I knew that some of the cars were similar but this is good information.

Re: Deluxe steering wheel assembly

I have assembled my steering wheel per the steps provided above. My horn ring is now stiff/rigid with zero flexibility. Therefore, the horn ring is not loose or spongey enough to be capable of tapping the horn to work. Any help would be appreciated. My truck is a 1964 Step with the deluxe steering wheel just like the pictures above. Thanks for your time.
