64 Deluxe steering wheel help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I recently picked up a deluxe steering wheel that was missing the horn hardware, which I acquired separately. Everything appears correct except the plastic retainer as the 3 raised areas are too tall and the horn assembly flops around. It appears these retainers are color coded and I have 2 different versions now... the red one in the picture (which is too tall) and a white/clearish one (which is too short).

As a reference I have the same wheel outlined in this thread that I followed for assembly. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=637192

I could really use height of the correct retainer so I can either find the right one or simply modify the tall/red one. Thanks!!

I didn't know they were color coded. Looks like in that thread he used a different color. Not sure what the correct height is.

I cant tell you right off hand how tall it is but the GM Part number is 764761 for our trucks 1961-1965 and 1966 on the custom steering wheels . If you scroll down theres a picture on the second line here. https://gmtiltcolumns.com/coming-soon-4/ . Fits many other Chevy applications on deluxe wheel only

I located and ordered p/n 764761 and it is the same height as the red one in my first post. So nothing has changed as the horn assembly is still very loose/floppy. It almost seems like I am missing something, but it is assembled identical to the thread I posted.

Any recommendations??

Did you try flipping the metal piece over to see if that changed anything with the sloppiness?

I followed the install process from the link in my first thread for part orientation and order in which the metal piece was installed with the tabs facing up (away from the wheel), which I assume is needed to align the flat plastic spacer with correlating notches. I tried flipping it and the horn ring was very rigid with zero ability to move.

How does this horn ring actually work as it seems like there should be some type of spring to hold it stable until pressure is applied.

Getting back after this issue as I still have not solved the problem and tried several isolators including the one recommended by 60-66 (764761). Any other suggestions?

My truck's translucent white one is just a hair over ¼" tall.

Thanks Arne. I think you may a different steering wheel as a 1/4 inch spacer is way too short for my deluxe wheel. For clarification, here's a photo of my wheel and I could use the height measurements for both plastic isolators for this specific wheel.

Ahh, my bad. I wasn't aware of the difference, and since no measurements have been posted so far, thought I'd throw out a data point. Not helpful, I now see.

Have you considered milling the too-tall red one down a bit?

Yep as I have 2 and already tried that with the crappy one that came with the kit from Classic Trucks which was also the wrong size. But it would be nice to start with the correct height as a target instead guessing. I also have a 3D printer and could print as well once I get the correct measurement.

Ok, problem solved. I took some measurements with a micrometer and drew up a single stand off to print that turned out to be spot on. So I printed 2 more and the horn works perfect now. No fancy connecting ring as my CAD skills are basic at best, but it works and one less thing to address.

The difference was fairly small, but obviously enough to not allow the horn assembly to tighten. Not sure why I did not think of this before, but very frustrating that even the kit from Classic Truck was incorrect. Now I may even tackle a basic restoration to the wheel itself.

I have assembled my steering wheel per the same steps as you. My horn ring is now stiff/rigid with zero flexibility. Therefore, the horn ring is not loose or spongey enough to be capable of tapping the horn for it to work. Any help would be appreciated. My truck is a 1964 Step with the deluxe steering wheel just like the pictures above. Thanks for your time.
