Upper Radiator hose with ls1 water pump
Plan to run a ls1 water pump (front vs top hose inlet) and was wondering what upper rad hose options I have.
The radiator has passenger side Upper/Lower inlets. The Truck is a '74 I have seen plent of options for a truck style water pump but can't use those. Even seen a few LS3 engine references but no radiator hose options. Don't mind reducers or splicing if I have too, just want a few options to start with versus standing in front of 500 hanging hoses at Napa.... |

Re: Upper Radiator hose with ls1 water pump
On my LS projects I make a wire pattern and head on down to Oreillys and they let me poke around the store room and find a hose that is close. Typically I have to do a bit of trimming to get to work. I'm using 2002 Camaro water pumps. I wouldn't do a spliced hose. Just one more place to leak. Pic of my 68 C10.

Yeah, was hoping to avoid that but it looks like that is whats gonna happen. It's not a very complicated bend patterns so hopefully it's easy to find something.

Re: Upper Radiator hose with ls1 water pump
I used a Gates #22436 hose and a 90-degree elbow off another random hose with a splice it has been working for 5 years with no issues. My LS is out of a 2002 Firebird. I assume the same water pump as you describe
Sorry didn't see you have a pass side rad. Maybe this will help someone else down the road. |

Re: Upper Radiator hose with ls1 water pump
On my 73 Camaro LS3 project I used a splice in the upper rad hose. I also welded a NPT "bung" into the bottom of the slice for the coolant cross over line. I used exhaust tubing that I welded a bead on both ends so the hose couldn't slip off. Never had an issue. Aftermarket splices with a bung are also available.

Re: Upper Radiator hose with ls1 water pump
used these a couple times in swaps, never leaked. If you are worried double clamp it, like the standard has become on boats where a leak can sink you.

I’m a bit late but maybe this info will help someone… I saved a few pics and info years ago when I was finishing my swap, I ended up with a splice in mine with different hose because I needed to reach the driver side, so no first hand knowledge. Anyway take a look at a gates 22271

Re: Upper Radiator hose with ls1 water pump
Closing out what I used for my config:
- 1974 C10 - Cold case LS swap radiator - LS1 water pump - TRUCK SPACING I used NAPA 8304 top and bottom. The top was trimmed an inch or 2 at the pump. The bottom is the top turned around and trimmed on both ends. I have a NAPA hose reducer (NBH900) for the top hose pump side. I believe this would work with CAR SPACING as well. I have used these in my 1964 Chevy II with Truck spacing, can’t believe they fit the C10 as well. Credit to church boys racing (Nova guys) for the initial recommendation to me like 6 years ago! |
