Starter, battery wiring

Should the wire from the alternator go directly to the battery and not the starter? I have seen both ways done and wondered which is the only way or if both are acceptable.

Does anyone have any pictures of how they did their wiring to the starter as well as the alternator? I am int he process of re-wiring my 67 and need some inspiration.

I've heard of it being both ways, but don't know why that would be the case. If you don't already have it, you can download the maintenance manual as a .pdf here:

It has all the wiring diagrams in it. Be sure to pick the '67 year model; there are some differences, I hear tell.

Yes, one wire alternator.

Wiring changed in 72, might help to know what year you are working on and if the wiring is OEM style or not.

Mine is a 67 and I am doing a new full aftermarket harness so looking for what others have done with the pathways, thoughts on the above, etc.

If you route the alternator wire back to the firewall and then to the driver's side, I believe you have a longer run using the conduit along the inside fender and radiator support.

If you route the alternator wire back to the firewall and then to the passenger's side, then you have a shorter run to the battery lug on the starter where now you have battery cable back to the battery post. The drawback is that you have to protect the alternator wire from exhaust and engine heat.

Speaking for 1971ish, it connects to the junction box on rh fender w or wo si alternator, with wire in positive cable, and one run to the "amp" meter. Dont know 67 however, could differ.
