Long water pump for SBC with 2 connections for heater?
Ive been looking to find a long water pump that will fit a small block that has standard rotation for v belt and has 2 ports for heater hoses. One port for the bypass to the manifold and the other port to return to the heater. I have searched 1973-1987 in my searches across rock auto, summit and others but cant find one.
If there isnt one Ill do the spacer kit with a short water pump and make it work. |

What you're looking for is the water pump for big trucks C/50 or larger.. Like this one:

I really appreciate the reply, but a question. Isn't that a short pump in the link you sent?
What Im needing to replace is a long style. Here is the setup I have, but I just dont have that 2nd port for the return to the heater. Last edited by msg; 01-01-2025 at 11:52 AM. |

Re: Long water pump for SBC with 2 connections for heater?
For future reference. Any port in the body of the pump is suction. Only outlet is where the pump pushes water into the block where it bolts up. So if you're looking for a feed to the heater core it will have to happen in the intake manifold somewhere or one of the cylinder head plugs on the side. The hose you have on there now is kinda doubling up on what GM already has designed into the block and pump with a 3rd hole on 1 side of the pump where it bolts up. (that is if you haven't used too much goop on the gaskets like some people do). Plug up the holes in that bypass set-up you have and use the fitting in the port of the intake in the lower left corner of your picture and use that as a 'feeder?' to the heater core--that is the way the factory does it and do the return to the radiator. Or just plug the front of the intake and use the return to the pump. Return hoses are usually 3/4'' diameter hose so the fitting will have to match

should be on the passenger side. Remember what the gasket looked like?
Edit Uh, yeah vortec. They fed the heater core off the back of the intake (factory) and returned it to the radiator. I think you can drill it out if necessary, the block that is Last edited by kwmech; 01-01-2025 at 12:57 PM. |

The lower hole ( below the threaded water pump mounting hole ) is the bypass. Which pulls water from the deck/head. The bypass that you have from the intake to the pump is usually how bbc are set up. On a sbc, that is usually the heater return.
Pretty sure they make pump spacers/extensions, if you want to run that short dual port pump. In a long pump/pulley set up. |

Yeah, that looks to be what I will end up doing. Before I bought a new pump and the spacers I thought Id check.

Yup, that bottom hole is the bypass in the block. However vortec heads don’t have a hole into the coolant passage. The bypass is the fitting from the front of the intake to the water pump.

So you have the bypass so it will purge. Move the heater core return to the water pump 3/4'' fitting. Plug the front of the intake. Right front corner of the intake feeds the heater core--5/8'' hose. By the way brass fittings and aluminum don't like each other much.
