Maybe Im calling the return the wrong hose, but the hose I need to account for now is the one in this diagram that looks like its connected to the radiator...but I think its supposed to be connected to the water pump since you had pointed out that the ports on the pump are actually suction.

Yeah, instead of the radiator it can go to the pump. Plugs--aluminum or steel would be better. Get a small tube of nickle anti-seize and apply to threads for long term protection, and make sure you have a good ground strap on the engine or even a couple of them like the factory used
