I would like to know what is the best option these days to upgrade a live axle truck to power steering? I like the idea of electric power steering but are a little concerned about the steering ratio. I understand a quickener would help.
Also, the manual steering box would need to be rebuilt, to get the best possible feel.
Ignoring the length of the steering shaft, would it be possible to use the available 55+ car or 63+ Corvette worm gear in the truck steering box to get a 16:1 ratio? Could a place like Lares perhaps build something like this?

I'm not sure of ratio with a stock box.

Low buck for early rigs many use the unit out of a Prius. That is said to be less twitchy than the one out of Out of an 06 or so Chevrolet Equinox that I have stashed in the shed that I since have learned may be a bit twitchy. My 2008 HHR with electric power steering sure doesn't feel like it has power steering at all though and at 55 to 70 mph it puts a strain on my wrist. I just put a module in it but it has way too much steering effort.

Budget allowing there are several units available from around 1500 to 2500 from our normal vendors.

I'm not one who will say "you gotta do this or buy this" simply because I respect those who are working on a limited budget and don't buy in to the concept that you have to buy new or spend the big bucks to build a nice truck but if the budget allows that may be the best avenue. Explore the options and search out and read the feedback and go from there.

I'm not sure what a "live axle' is, but I have a '54 3100 with the original straight axle. I'm using the original steering box that I went trough, inspected and adjusted to factory specs. I then put a 2005 Prius EPAS on it. It works fine and I have about $160.00 in it. I have posts on this site if you are interested.

A solid/live axle is usually a drive axle that is not an independent axle.

The front axle on our two wheel drive trucks that still have axles would be beam axles.
