Thanks for the reply. This is essentially what I ended up doing. I rotated the spring to align the top correctly, eliminating the noise. I locked the spring in this new position by drilling a hole up through the bottom spring pocket at the end of the spring and installing a grade 8 bolt to act as a new spring stop. The noise is gone and the spring cannot rotate out of position. Now that the spring is no longer seated all the way down into the lower pocket, I expected the driver side to sit higher. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the truck is almost dead level. There is less than 1/16" difference side-to-side. I can definitely live with that.
