Re: California fires

I have been thinking, likely even more insurance companies will pull out of Cali. And those that can't afford to build back after this. Big money will likely swoop in and buy up all properties they can to flip for a profit, pushing some home owners out of the county. It's probably happening already.

Re: California fires

[QUOTE=MySons68C20;9363184]I feel terrible for the folks that live there....a lot of them won't rebuild due to the time it takes for proper permits let alone trying to find a contractor.
On top of all that State Farm pulled the insurance in that area Oct 2024 iirc.
It will be interesting to see how all this plays out.[/QUOTE

All the permits should be waved at a time like this.

Re: California fires

I wonder how many multi-family units such as apartments, condos, etc.. will get built in place of single-family homes. And maybe there will be entertainment type venues built with hotels. It will be all about the money.

Re: California fires

Same thing here with the hurricanes all the 6 to 10 million dollar homes are totally destroyed on the water and none of them are rebuilding there selling for the value of the land for a million but when you research the families bought in the 40s and 50s and paid 4 hundred thousand because they know all the building permits will take years and codes will be costly

Re: California fires

Shame for sure. I'm blown away by what I've seen, looks like a nuclear bomb went off. No words if this is arson. City wasn't prepared, really a mess. I can't imagine being on the fire crew, how many times they heard let it burn. Perhaps they should break up the land with rock barriers in places. Problem is govt. would screw that up too, and besides, rock doesn't pay California taxes.

You could have had all of the fire trucks and firefighters you could pack in that area and it wouldn't have made any difference with the wind blowing like it was.

What the average person doesn't understand is that every time you open a fire hydrant the water pressure drops a little in all of the other hydrants that are already open. The more you open the more it drops. Add to that all of the water lines in homes and businesses that are running water because the water lines are damaged by the fire. Plastic lines melt and the solder joints in copper lines blow apart from the heat melting the solder. Also, any large building that is on fire and has an automatic sprinkler system will be flowing hundreds of gallons of water an hour when the automatic sprinklers kick in. There is no way any city water system can keep up with that kind of water flow. That is why the fire hydrants were running out of water.....

Re: California fires

IDK? Born and raised in this state, more than half of it in So Cal. Some do not seem to get it. As I already stated, the winds have always been here. Yes, even those "hurricane force winds" as being spouted by the media. Why is the danger more prominent here and now? We have had wild fires in the past just like any other state. Why are they "fire storms" now? The finger will be pointed everywhere but to the truth, but there is no question this disaster was magnified by decisions made by by those in leadership positions. It is most likely a travesty that no one will be held accountable for.

Edit an example for what goes on here. More than 10 years ago my BIL built a house in Malibu on property purchased years before that. Very close to the current fires. Almost lost it during the last event but he cleared around the house despite regulations. So, during construction he was driving a backhoe on the property on an old fire access road that had over grown. Other trucks used as well. Obviously the weeds that had been there went away with the traffic. Even though the road was close to the house he had to purchase seed from the county and replant the weeds or face thousands of dollars in fines.
